Colorado State Falls to New Mexico, 68-55
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.  – The battle between Mountain West's two top teams and offenses went in New Mexico's favor, defeating Colorado State, 68-55, Thursday evening in The Pit.
Â
Holding the Lobos who are averaging 84.1 points per game to 68 points – their 3rd-losest total on the season – was not enough as the Rams defense needed more from their offense. Colorado State shot just 29.9% from the floor and 17.4% from 3-point land, which both represent season-lows. The loss drops Colorado State to 15-4 overall and 11-4 in the Mountain West. Meanwhile, the Lobos improve to 13-3 overall, but more importantly jump CSU in the MW standings to 10-3. This makes Friday's matchup at 5 p.m. the ultimate decider of who captures the 2020-21 Mountain West Regular Season Championship.
Â
"Defensively, we had the right Lobos shooting and executed the plan, but offensively we just couldn't get it going," head coach Ryun Williams said. "When you are playing a team that averaging close to 85 points a game, you are going to need to be consistent. We won the second and third quarters, but our first and fourth quarters were not good. There was some frustration out there because they want it so bad. It was a delicate game where if you make one or two bad mistakes then New Mexico was there to convert. What we told them in the locker room was you know you can beat this team, but it'll take 75 or so points to do it."
Â
It was not like the Rams were never in it. Petra Farkas drained a three to make it a two-point game, 44-42 NM lead, at the 1:17 mark of the third quarter. However, like much of the game the Lobos kept answering and at this instance it was a four-point run to go into the fourth quarter up six. To start the fourth quarter, McKenna Hofschild rimmed out a layup, but was fouled and made both free throws to signify that the Rams were there to make the fourth interesting. Following was an 8-0 run from NM that gave them a 12-point cushion that was hard to recover from.
Â
Individually, Hofschild scored a team-high 12 points, while Karly Murphy and Ellie Boni pitched in nine and eight points, respectively. The rebound battle was about even with NM just having two more at 46-44. Tori Williams led CSU with 10 boards with Murphy grabbing nine herself. The errors weren't vast, but New Mexico took advantage when they did occur. For instance, CSU had just nine turnovers to NM's 12, but the Lobos efficiently turned it into nine points.
Â
The two teams will be back out on the court at 5 p.m. Friday for the regular-season finale.
