Rams Accumulate 12 First-Place Finishes Saturday

BOULDER, Colo. – Twelve first-place finishes on Saturday put Colorado State at 14 total in the two-day CU Invitational, representing the most among the competing schools at Potts Field.

It was a dominating performance that could have been more had the Rams competed at full strength in all the events. The host Buffaloes tallied 12 first-place finishes. Individually for the Rams, 17 personal records were achieved, including nine top-20 marks in school history. There were also a flurry of Ram debuts and season debuts for student-athletes coming back from injury – most notably, Jessica Ozoude.

Lauren Gale accounted for two of those wins and two of those top-20 marks, but really, they can be simplified to top-10. A week after her seemingly great 200-meter race at the home meet was scratched due to clock malfunction, Gale shrugged it off and put up the third-best time in school history with a 23.61 to easily take first place in the event. About an hour earlier, Gale won the 100 at 11.67 – good for seventh in school history.

Picking up where they left off on Friday, the women in the throwing events continued their dominance as a Ram won the hammer and the shot put. The hammer saw a 1-thru-3 CSU finish with all PR'ing and bettering their already top-20 marks. Tarynn Sieg took first with a throw of 198'11'' to jump from 13th to fifth all-time. Haley Showalter followed at 195'2'', jumping two names on the list and landing in ninth all-time. Ashton Hallsted improved by a full foot at 190'11'' and will stay 16th in CSU's record book. Gabi McDonald won the shot put to go along with her second-place discus performance on Friday.

Rounding out the top-20 women marks was Jordan Lanning as she sneaked in a sub-14 second 100m hurdles at 13.99 – good for 11th all time. Additionally, the women won the 3000m (Emily Chaston) and 4x100m relay.

On the men's side, Germain Barnes recorded the fifth-best CSU time in his 110m hurdle win at 14.03. Previously, Barnes was 16th on the list, improving his time by .42 seconds. In second place was Andrew Doctor with a baby PR that inched him up one spot to No. 17 all-time at 14.48.

The last top-20 mark for the men came from Tom Willems in the 200 with a time of 21.40 – good for 12th all-time. The first-place finishes Saturday for the men also included the 3000 with Mason Brown, 1500 with Jacob Brueckman, 800 with Cameron Ross, and the shot put with Mariano Kis.

Next, the Rams will travel to Norman, Okla. for the two-day Sonner Invitational that starts Friday, April 16th.

Coach's Corner
Head Coach Brian Bedard
"We obviously had a pretty good meet when you have the number of PRs that we had and first-place finishes. That is not to mention the movement on the school list as well. The weather was amazing the last two days for the meet, which should set us up well for next week at Oklahoma and the rest of our season. The team seems to be really coming together and building momentum off each other. The athletes were excited about the meet for sure. We will now take a few days off for spring break before we get geared for Oklahoma."
