Rams Wrap Up Sooner Invitational with Six First Place Finishes
NORMAN, Okla. – Four of Colorado State track and field's six first-place finishes came from the distance group Saturday in the final day of the Sooner Invitational at the John Jacobs Complex.
Â
The Rams swept the 1,500-meter and 800-meter races on the men and women's side. Making the biggest impression was Bailee Carr who crossed the 800 with the sixth-best time in school history at 2:09.71. Dawson LaRance completed the sweep, winning the men 800 at 1:51.71. For the 1500, Lauren Neugeboren took first place with a personal record time of 4:33.57, while Ryan Birkmeier in his first time running the outdoor event won with a time of 3:54.81. Additionally, in both 1500s the Rams finished 1-2 as Jenna Diers and Cal Banta crossed right after Neugeboren and Birkmeier, respectively.
Â
To no surprise, Lauren Gale represented the other first-place finish for the women. She crushed the competition, crossing the finish line three seconds ahead of the next competitor in the 400 with a time of 52.37. DeVon Washington and Tom Willems took second and third in their 400 with the latter obtaining a PR (47.34) by .05 seconds to move into a tie for 10th all-time at CSU.
Â
The last win of the day came in the twilight hour of the meet as the men's 4x400-meter relay featuring Adam Stark, Tom Willems, DeVon Washington and Germain Barnes clocked a 3:15.59.
Â
The women's heptathlon wrapped up its third remaining events with two Rams notching two top-20 all-time school marks. Jordan Lanning in her first outdoor collegiate multi finished fifth with a score of 5043 for the 12th spot in CSU history, while Lexie Keller, participating in her first multi since freshman year, scored a 4868 – good for 16th on the same list. On the men's side, Mauricio Galindo Vega and Drew Thompson completed their first decathlon, placing ninth and 10th, respectively.
Â
Next week, the Rams will be back competing in the confines of the Jack Christiansen Track for three-straight days. The Glenn Morris Multis go Thursday through Friday, while the Jack Christiansen Invitational will be all day Saturday.
Â
Coach's Corner
Distance coach Art Siemers
"We sent just a small group down there, but they did an outstanding job. We did not worry about times and just told them to go out and compete. They virtually won every event we participated in plus going 1-2 in two of them. Bailee had an outstanding race and won by a large margin. We have not had a lot of races this season because of COVID, but I'm really proud about how the team is performing. It'll be fun next week when we put out a full squad at home."
