Dawson Punches Ticket to Nationals Prior to Weather Postponement

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The road back to the NCAA Championships was not particularly easy for Adam Dawson, but nonetheless the sophomore will be throwing the discus there again after qualifying Friday in the NCAA West Prelims at E.B. Cushings Stadium.
Â
Dawson, of Parker, Colo., threw a season-best 56.77m/186'3'' in the second of three flights, holding third place while he went to go sit in the stands to know his fate.
Â
"I was super nervous," Dawson said now with the ease of being able to laugh about it. "I threw my mark and had to watch 16 more guys try to beat my mark. I was up in the stands having nail-biter moments. I kept refreshing the live results to make sure I was still in there. Once I found out I was for sure in, I was pretty excited and my teammates next to me congratulated me. That is a nice feeling. To go in 2019 and get a chance to go again in 2021 is a blessing."Â
Â
After the dust settled, Dawson wound up in eighth place and within the top-12 to advance to Nationals which will be held June 9-12 in Eugene, Ore. As a freshman in 2019, Dawson finished 17th with a throw of 55.17m/181'0'' at NCAAs in Austin, Texas. Two weeks ago at the Mountain West Championships, he took silver with a 55.45m/181' 11".
Â
"It has been a challenging year for him as he suffered a shoulder injury in the indoor season that put him out the rest of that season and carried into outdoor season," head coach Brian Bedard said. "There was some concern that he wouldn't be able to come back, but we just did a slow, patient training plan to get him back on track with the hopes that at the end of the season he would be back at the level he was at pre-injury. Going into the conference meet, he had some inconsistencies in his technique that we tweaked after we got back. It was risky late in the season, but neither he nor I liked what was going on, so we made a few changes. It started to click over the past two weeks, and he felt comfortable even after the warm-up throws down here. Every throw he had was very solid. His composure was awesome. He looked like a veteran. I'm really proud of performance."
Â
After the discus concluded, freshman Allam Bushara competed in the triple jump, measuring a jump of 50'10.75'' – 2.75'' off his PR – to place 27th. Then the weather came around 5 p.m. which put a halt to all action and eventually delayed all competition until Saturday.Â
