Air Force hosting nine-team Bedford Cup

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – For first-year coach, a season-opening tournament isn't about one thing, it's about everything.

"I think just seeing how they compete, what level they're at, the doubles combinations, personalities on the court and how they handle tough opponents," Colorado State tennis coach Mai-Ly Tran said. "Overall, it's everything. It's going to be a first look at competition where they're not playing each other, how they line up and some of the conference teams."

The Bedford Cup begins Thursday at the Air Force Academy, the first of four days of play. The nine-team field also includes BYU, Colorado, Denver, Idaho State, Montana State, Northern Arizona and Wyoming. The Rams will have duals in the spring season against Colorado, Air Force and Wyoming.

The tournament is expected to be built with four draws of 16 in singles action, two draws of 16 in doubles. The first day will feature one round of singles, with two more rounds the following day. Saturday's action will have one round each of singles and doubles, with Sunday's closing sessions one more round of singles and doubles.

Colorado State returns two players (both seniors) from last year's squad – All-Mountain West doubles player Tracy Guo and Anastasiia Kotsyuba. The rest of the team consists of five transfers in their first year with the Rams. This will be the first action for the program under Tran's guidance, and she believes being on the road will give them all more time to bond.

Most importantly of all, they get a chance to play after a shortened season last spring.

"Not having a full last year, I think everybody is excited to have some individual tournaments. Right now, we're just grateful to get on the court and compete and travel together as a team. That's what we're looking for, too, is getting to know each other a little bit more."

Tran has announced two adjustments to the schedule. The team will not be hosting the Jon Messick Invitational Oct. 1-3; they have replaced it with the Beach Tennis Tournament Oct. 8-10 in Long Beach, Calif.
