Rams Head South For In-State Dual

Squad puts undefeated mark on line at Air Force
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – No holding back.
Â
At this time of the year, even with a prior win over their foe, Colorado State women's swimming and diving coach Christopher Woodard wants his team focused on the task at hand when the Rams return to competition for the first time in two month with a Mountain West dual at Air Force.
Â
The meet at the Cadet Natatorium begins at 11 a.m., with a live stream available.
Â
"Two months is too long," Woodard said. "They've got to knock the rust off. I think we've done a good job or preparing them in the past couple of weeks about the things we were missing the past two months – a lot of start work, a lot of turn work, getting back on video and back on the power rack. I'm hoping these past two and a half weeks allow them an easier transition into racing."
Â
The Rams have not competed since the Phill Hansel Invitational in Houston on Nov. 18-20, where they placed fifth as a team. A pair of Mountain West duals in California two weeks ago were cancelled due to COVID concerns on other teams, so the Rams tried to simulate completion last week with an intrasquad dual.
Â
Woodard said the challenges this weekend will be mental as much as physical, though those are very real for the swimmers who are in the middle of a hard set of training weeks. Times won't be looked at as hard as effort in fighting to the wall.
Â
"To successfully taper in a two-peak season where we rest in midseason and have to go up, the end of January necessarily has to be the most intense and typically the highest volume," Woodard said. "Then when you have to head down to Air Force and swim at 7,200 feet, they know it's going to be tough. The expectation is, yes, you must swim well tired."
Â
Colorado State is undefeated in duals on the year, off to a 13-0 start, which matches the third-longest run in program history. The Rams already have a 265-145 victory over Air Force at the season-opening Intermountain Shootout in Grand Junction, a two-day meet with every event. This dual will be scaled down in terms of the number of scoring events, and like every other team, the Rams have lost training days to illness and injury.
Â
The goal remains the same with two more duals left on the calendar, with the swimmers and divers all focusing on their main events in the trip down south.
Â
"You ended 2021 perfect, you better start 2022 perfect, so you need to eke out every single point you can get," Woodard said of the message to the team.
