Behind 16 kills from Jones, Colorado State finishes road weekend 2-0
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Going from the Fort Collins altitude to California sea level for the second game in a row, the Colorado State volleyball team swept San Diego State on the road Saturday afternoon to remain among the top three teams in the Mountain West conference.
Â
The Aztecs posed a real threat to the Rams as all three set wins were by four points or less, but the poise of the veteran Colorado State team was able to bring home the win from a hostile environment without dropping a set.
Â
Sophomore Malaya Jones was the top performer offensively for the Rams as the outside hitter totaled 16 kills, hitting at a .536 percentage with only one error on the afternoon. Adding two blocks from the front row, the Aztecs couldn't slow down the hard-hitting outside.
Â
The Rams turned up the heat on the Aztecs from the first serve as set one was a great defensive performance from Colorado State, limiting the Aztecs to a .242 hitting percentage in the first set while recording three blocks themselves to win by a score of 25-21. For the second time this season, the score of the second set fell the exact same as the first. Colorado State won the second set also by a score of 25-21 and just to keep the consistency again, also stuffed three blocks on the Aztecs again in the second.
Â
Closing in on a Saturday sweep, San Diego State took a 7-4 lead in the third set, looking to avoid the sweep at home. A 5-0 run from the Ram's best server on the day, Kate Yoshimoto, put Colorado State back in charge of the score and the match, winning set three, 25-23.
Â
Annie Sullivan was another key hitter for the Rams, ending the afternoon with 10 kills on a .435 hitting percentage. As a team, Colorado State hit .347, continuing to lead the Mountain West in team hitting percentage.
Â
Kennedy Stanford finished her dominate weekend with eight kills while Naeemah Weathers added five. Stanford was also the digs leader for the Rams with eight while Yoshimoto had seven.
Â
The Rams will return to Moby Arena to host Boise State next Thursday at 7 p.m. The game will be Colorado State's annual Pink Out game.
