Colorado State to host annual Pink Out game Thursday versus Broncos

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Colorado State volleyball team will mark the middle of their conference season with a split weekend between being the home and away team. The Rams will host Boise State Thursday night at Moby Arena before hitting the road to Logan, Utah to match up with Utah State Saturday night. Thursday's game against Boise State will serve as Colorado State's annual Pink Out game honoring both cancer survivors and those who are still a part of the ongoing fight.

What You Need to Know
  • The Rams won both games on the road last weekend as they beat Fresno State 3-2 in the Save Mart Center before traveling to San Diego State where they swept the Aztecs 3-0.
  • Colorado State played well in both games with Fresno State continuing their streak of playing its best on its home court. The Bulldogs gave the Rams a scare in Colorado State's second consecutive five-set match, but the Rams were able to leave Fresno victorious. Colorado State's win over the Aztecs was a complete team effort with a team hitting percentage of .347 compared to San Diego State's .224.
  • Junior Kennedy Stanford was named the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season thanks to her two performances last weekend. Stanford totaled a new career high 28 kills over Fresno State in the five-set thriller and eight kills against San Diego State. Overall, the outside hitter moved into the top ten of the Mountain West for total kills as she currently sits ninth with 229 total kills on the season.

Series History
  • Both the Broncos and the Aggies have the exact same record coming into week nine of the season and when these two teams played each other last week, Boise State won in five sets. While this will be the only time this season the Rams will face either of these teams, they will most likely see a similar competition level through both matchups.
  • Colorado State's history with Boise State is not an overly long standing one compared to other rivalries within the Mountain West with majority of the matchups between these two teams coming after 2011. The Rams have only ever lost to the Broncos once and that was in a five-set thriller on the road in 2016. Boise State has yet to claim a victory in Moby Arena and Colorado State will look to keep it that way come Thursday night.
  • Similar to Boise State, the Aggies have only ever beat Head Coach Tom Hilbert once in his 26 years with the Rams, but this loss is recent for CSU. With a 32-game win streak against Utah State coming into last season, the Ram beat the Aggies at home 3-0, but then took their first loss to Utah State in nearly 40 years when they went on the road. The Rams will look to restart a win streak Saturday night.

Series vs. Broncos: 21-1
Home vs. Broncos: 12-0
Hilbert vs. Broncos: 19-1

Series vs. Aggies: 33-15
Away vs. Aggies: 13-6
Hilbert vs. Aggies: 17-1

Match Notes Nuggets

  • While Stanford served as the top contributor for the Rams last weekend, Colorado State saw other key performances from Malaya Jones, Helena Perez, Naeemah Weathers and Alyssa Groves.
  • Jones let the way offensively for the Rams against San Diego State with 16 kills and a .536 hitting percentage. She also had five digs and two blocks.
  • Perez put up a career night in the backrow during Colorado State's win over Fresno State last Thursday night. Perez totaled 15 digs, good for a new career-high, and a service ace while playing in all five sets.
  • Weathers continues to take on more and more in Colorado State's offensive push as the junior had eight kills against Fresno State. One thing she has done well all season is block the ball. With two total blocks in each game this weekend, Weathers continues to become more consistent for the Rams.
  • Groves has seen varying playing time all season, but that hasn't stopped her from taking advantage of this playing time to help her team move forward. Playing in four of the five sets against Fresno State, Groves finished with seven kills on eight attempts, good for .875 average. Moving into the second half of the Mountain West season, Groves continues to show that the Rams have great depth behind them.
