Colorado State bounces back with a 3-1 win over the Aggies
LOGAN, Utah – The Colorado State volleyball team outwitted the hostile environment at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum to beat Utah State 3-1 Saturday night in Logan, Utah.
Playing in what normally serves as the Utah State basketball arena, the Rams faced the Utah State Aggies as well as the 1716 fans in attendance during Saturday night's win.
The Ram's defense shined through the first two sets of the match, holding Utah State to .089 and -.420 hitting percentages in the first two sets. Defensively, the Rams had 22 digs in the first set alone including seven from libero Kate Yoshimoto.
To match the defensive effort, Karina Leber totaled five kills in a 25-23 first set win for the Rams, while Kennedy Stanford had eight kills buy the end of the second set, which the Rams won 25-14.
Unwilling to be swept at home, the Aggies rallied back to a third-set victory as Utah State capitalized on five service errors in the fifth set alone for the Rams. Colorado State also put up a defensive stand at the net with 10 total blocks on the night including four block solos from setter Ciera Pritchard.
Looking to hold the Aggies momentum to one set, both outside hitters for Colorado State, Stanford and Malaya Jones tallied five kills in set four. The Rams also finished the final set without a serving error, propelling them to a 25-22 set and 3-1 match win.
Stanford finished the night as the kills leader for the Rams totaling 16 while Jones had 11 and Naeemah Weathers had eight. In the backrow for the Rams, both Yoshimoto and defensive specialist Helena Perez ended the night with 11 digs while Ruby Kayser followed close behind with seven. Perez also added two service aces which took place during her momentum changing service run early in the fourth set.
The Rams return home next week to start round two of the Mountain West regular season as they host San Diego State Thursday and Fresno State Saturday. Colorado State beat both of these teams on the road two weeks ago. Gametimes are set for 7 p.m. versus the Aztecs and 1 p.m. versus the Bulldogs.
