Rams’ divers to see first dual action this season

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Continuing with the current thread of training, Colorado State's women's swimming and diving entire team will head to Denver for an in-state dual Friday.

Diving is set to begin at 3:30 p.m., with the action in the lanes beginning at 4:30 p.m. This will be the first dual this year where the Rams will have their divers factoring into the outcome, and head coach Christopher Woodard said all four of their performers are scheduled to compete.

CSU is coming off a double-dual win over Colorado School of Mines and New Mexico State, a day of racing which saw the Rams win 10 of the events officially, an 11th as an exhibition. The team is still building up yardage in the pool and plates in the weight room, putting the focus on strong finishes.

"I think what we've done is to continue what we talked about after Fresno; we wanted attention to details in the back half, especially our turns and our finishes," Woodard said. "Monday, we finished practice by working on nothing but finishes, so I expect to see a lot of fight toward the end, and I expect to see people get their hand on the wall --  not letting their legs go, not letting their rate go, but fighting to the very end.

"Their tempo can get faster in one of three ways: Don't breathe, which makes it a lot easier to tempo. You can cut the stroke short, but you lose distance; but the last and most effective one is the legs, so being able to bring their legs in to a higher degree at the back half of swims is normally what propels them home."

Colorado State has opened the season with some strong individual performances, with freshman Alexis Trietley sporting the top times in the Mountain West in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyles, Lucy Matheson in the 200 butterfly. Matheson, Anika Johnson, Katie McClelland and Erin Dawson all have times which rank in the top five.

Denver is currently 2-4 in duals this campaign, three of the results coming against Mountain West teams. The Pioneers beat Air Force for their first win, but have two losses to UNLV, one a swim-only score. The Rams are 2-0 on the season, extending their dual winning streak to 16, including a 165-135 victory a year ago at DU.

This will be the first meet this season with the Rams close to full strength, thanks to all four divers being healthy. At the first event of the year, only senior Jessica Albanna was able to compete at the Chick-fil-A Invitational in Fresno, Calif.

"There can be cohorts between the sprints and distance, and there's even more with us and diving because we do different sports at different times," Woodard said. "We're putting a big spotlight on the divers for this meet. We're eager to see what they can do, and they have been – knock on wood – healthy for the last week."
