Colorado State Sweeps Nevada to Remain Unbeaten in Conference

Rams to face only other unbeaten team in the conference at home on Saturday
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Moving to 5-0 in the Mountain West this season, the Colorado State volleyball team swept the Nevada Wolf Pack 3-0 Thursday night at Moby Arena. The Rams have sealed a matchup of the unbeaten as San Jose State, who is also 5-0 in conference play, travels to Fort Collins Saturday afternoon.
Â
A battle of consistency became the top story during the Rams' Thursday night win over Nevada as the two opening sets both ended by a score of 25-23 in favor of the Rams.
Â
Consistency from both teams on offense, with the Rams and the Wolf Pack hitting under .200 in both opening sets, and consistency on defense as both teams traded blocks and side outs back-and-forth. The Rams, usually a team that likes to capitalize on long serving runs, didn't see a serving run of over three points in either of the first two sets.
Â
The Rams are not shy of going up two sets to none so far this season, but in the past, the third set has been one they have been quick to surrender after getting ahead. Learning from these past games and with Nevada knocking on the doorstep of a set win, Colorado State kept its foot on the gas and ran away with the match sweep in set three, winning the third set 25-13.
Â
In set three, the Rams were finally able to get into a serving rhythm while catching the Nevada defense off balance. Starting the set with a 7-1 run, Colorado State was back in control of the tempo within the match and while consistency through the first two sets allowed Nevada to say within reach, the Rams closed the door on the Wolf Pack, putting up big numbers in the third.
Â
The conference leading offense of Colorado State hit a team average of .591 in the third set compared to Nevada hitting a .000 with nine errors. With three blocks in the third set, the Rams were able to capitalize on a tired Nevada offense that just ran out of steam.
Â
Top performers for the Rams include outside hitter Kennedy Stanford who finished the night with nine kills and four digs. Malaya Jones and Annie Sullivan weren't far behind with eight kills each. Both middle blockers for Head Coach Tom Hilbert's squad, Karina Leber and Naeemah Weathers were a part of four blocks a piece and libero Kate Yoshimoto dug up 10 hits on defense.
Â
Colorado State's defense was able to limit the Wolf Pack to just a .084 team hitting average with only 33 kills.
Â
The Rams will remain at home this weekend as San Jose State travels to play in Moby Arena Saturday at 1 p.m. for a match between the unbeaten.
