Wyoming visits Saturday as team honors seniors

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – With only one home meet this season, the team is intent on doing it right.

Colorado State women's swimming and diving team will honor eight seniors with the program during Saturday's Orange Out before attempting to extend it's dual winning streak against its border rival, Wyoming at Moby Pool. The 3-meter diving competition will take place at 11:10 a.m., leading into swimming action at noon. A live stream is available.

Emotions will run high at the start, and head coach Christopher Woodard feels they'll continue to push his team during competition.

"I don't know if you can take the emotions out. The emotions are baked into it," Woodard said. "Emotions sometimes can cloud our performance, but I think in an event like this it only enhances what we're able to do. I'm all for it. Put the emotion in."

With three dual victories this season, Colorado State has extended its winning streak to 17 in a row. Last week's victory over Denver was the closest margin in the streak, just four points, with the 152-148 final and exact replica of last season's win over the Cowgirls. In winning the meet, the Rams snapped a 12-year skid to its rivals.

This season, the Rams have bolstered their success on the back of front-end speed, with 21 event wins, as well as with strong depth in races, particularly in the longer events. Freshman Alexis Trietley has yet to lose a 100-yard freestyle race this year, and in duals, she is unbeaten in the 50 free, as are Lucy Matheson in the 200 backstroke; Amanda Hoffman in the 200 butterfly; Anika Johnson in the 200 freestyle; and Maya White in the 1,000 free.

The Rams continue to build up their workload at this point of the season, and it led to a bit of an awakening for Woodard as he watched his team take out races in a way he didn't expect, but definitely applauded.

"I think I underestimated them. I think their ability to swim really, really aggressive early in the races was impressive," he said. "They took control of every single race, and that wasn't something I expected coming into the meet in a week where we put in a fair amount of intensity and volume."

Wyoming is 2-2 in dual this year with wins over New Mexico and Colorado Mesa, taking losses at Air Force and Northern Colorado.

Colorado State has seven seniors still competing with the team – Jessica Albanna, Katelyn Bartley, Amanda Hoffman, Liza Lunina, Sarah Mundy, Caroline Perry and Hannah Sykes. Sydnee Whitty was also part of their freshman class, and while physically unable to compete, she still remains active with the team. Combined, they account for 33 Mountain West placings, with Hoffman, Mundy, Sykes and Whitty all having posted top-10 times in program history. Mundy is part of the school-record setting 400- and 800-yard freestyle relay teams.
