Rams Cruise Past Mercer for Late-Night Victory

Colorado State used big runs to pick up a victory against the Bears
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Colorado State used big runs across all four quarters on its way to a 79-51 victory over Mercer on a late Friday night at the Mirage. The Rams move to 4-1 overall on the season and will face Auburn on Saturday afternoon at the Las Vegas Invitational.

Both teams start the game trading buckets, putting the score even four minutes in at 8-8. The Rams made their first run shortly after with a 9-0 tear to lead 20-10 after the first 10 minutes of action. CSU shot 50 percent from downtown on 4-of-8 shooting and 7-of-17 from the floor.

Colorado State put some distance between Mercer in the second quarter, using another big run, this time an 18-2 blast to lead by 25 at 39-14 with about three minutes left in the half. The Rams led 41-20 at the break after adding a pair from McKenna Hofschild at the charity stripe.

The Rams kept their lead through the third even through Mercer got within 15 about half-way through the quarter. Colorado State's offense continued to fire on all cylinders to push its lead back to 20 at 57-37. CSU failed to hit a basket from 3-point range but got easy buckets with 12 points in the paint and the rest from the charity stripe.

In the final quarter, CSU was able to put in the bench and continued to cruise to a victory. The Rams finished the game scoring 4-of-7 from downtown on their way to dropping 22 points, a game-high, in the frame. Of the 22 points, 14 came from the bench, as well as seven coming from four Mercer turnovers.

Colorado State finished shooting 38 percent from 3-point (11-of-29) and 43.5 percent (30-of-69) from the floor. The Rams also converted 8-of-10 changes from the stripe. Destiny Thurman led all scorers with 19 points, including a pair of threes. Cailyn Crocker followed with 12 points and McKenna Hofschild followed hitting 10 points – extending her double-figure scoring to all five games this season.
