Team leaves state to face New Mexico and Air Force
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – With nearly a month away from competition – and more than a month break awaiting the team after this weekend – a double dual is a perfect opportunity to go all out.
Colorado State's women's swimming and diving team travels to Albuquerque, N.M., this Friday and Saturday for a Mountain West double dual against host New Mexico and Air Force. The meet begins Friday at 4 p.m., 11 a.m. on Saturday. The Rams are 4-0 this season after beating Wyoming at Moby Pool on Nov. 5, pushing their dual streak to 18 consecutive victories.
"We always like this part of the season," CSU coach Christopher Woodard said. "I want to see the people we're going to be up against in February and get a feel for what their personnel looks like and how we're going to respond to it."
Air Force is 2-0 in duals, 1-0 in the conference with a win over Wyoming. New Mexico is 2-3 in duals, 0-1 in conference having lost to Wyoming. Both teams will offer a challenge to the Rams' streak in different ways, with distance races looking to be tight affairs based on times at this point.
In the recent past, Colorado State would be off at this point, having just semi tapered for a midseason invitational. With a change in scheduling, this meet was added to bridge the gap in time off, with the team continuing to add yardage to their workouts. Through this season, Woodard has seen a resiliency grow throughout his team, leading to strong finishes to races and the ability to fight for places, a character trait which paid off in a come-from-behind win over Denver.
To that end, he feels October meets are generally easier to set up for success, not necessarily in team results, but in individual measurements. He sees the timing of this meet as more of an added challenge, having seen his team rise to the occasion not just in competition.
"Honestly, we always laid down our macro cycles and kind of focused on what we're going to do, and I don't think we got away from that, but we've focused quite a bit on resiliency and our mental approach on racing," he said. "The accountability we need to have with each other, the ability to push through tough sets and especially at the end of races. Part of that was in conjunction with a sweep of illnesses that hit the team, so that seemed apropos that we focused on the mental aspects.
"They respond to the coaching staff as well. Things happen, we understand that, but what I like to see is X happened, so now I'm going to do Y. I think that shows the maturity of a team that I'm not just going to accept the obstacle in front of me, I'm going to find a way around it."
