Hofschild paces scoring output with 31 points
FORT COLLINS, Colo. — Home sweet home.Â
Â
After a long four-game road trip, Colorado State women's basketball team (5-3) returned to Moby Arena for the first time in nearly three weeks. Thankful to be home, the Rams also grasped onto a victory at the hands of Western Michigan (2-5) 85-65.
Â
"This was the next game, this was the most important game of the year," head coach Ryun Williams said. "Winning is never easy, but after a couple of tough losses your confidence takes a little bit of a hit, but I liked how our kids responded."
Â
Respond they did, with nine different scorers for the Rams, three in the double-digit range, taking take care of business.
Â
Business was no different for McKenna Hofschild, who continued her impressive senior year. She continued to wheel and deal on the floor with a season-high 31 points. While she was only one point short of a career high, she was also one assist off a double-double with nine on the afternoon.
Â
In the final 4 minutes, Hofschild added four assists to her assist total, all while sitting one shy of matching her career-scoring mark.
Â
"We had two starters out, so I knew we'd be missing a little scoring," Hofschild said. "It's something we all took on our shoulders, and it was a fun game."
Â
While Hofschild was the main point producer for the Rams squad, Cali Clark also was prominent on the floor. She put up her own impressive numbers to add to the depth of the Rams squad, coming in to fill the holes left behind by the injured Destiny Thurman and Sydney Mech.
Â
Clark ended with her own season-high 11 points, along with six rebounds. Megan Boyd added 11 points.
Â
"We all have each other's back, and when one person is down, we pick each other up," Clark said. "We had two players come in today and do really well. Just having trust in the team and knowing that we're going to put our best in the floor is important."
Â
While the score line displays a blowout for the Rams, it wasn't comfortable for the entire 40 minutes. In fact, Williams mentioned how he was never comfortable for the entire game.
Â
With the changes and injuries to Thurman and Mech, Colorado State had to adjust a little bit. This hurt their defensive game, as Western Michigan cut what was a 24-point lead in the third quarter to a 12-point lead in the fourth.
Â
"We preach no unnecessary fouling," Williams said. "I thought we were pretty good on the ball initially, but once they put it on the floor, we did a poor job separating. We gave them too many straight-line drives and that's why we fouled."
Â
While a 5-3 record is albeit not the best or worst record any team can have, for the Rams it's a product of showing what they're made of. Each win this season has been 20-plus victories helping them mark their stamp on the Mountain West.
Â
While conference play doesn't begin for Colorado State until after Christmas, they are continuing to build their momentum and carry what they have now into the games which really matter. These games are a great test to do this and get a sense of where the team stands.
Â
"I like how the team competes, they seem to have fun playing basketball," Williams said. "I like how for the most part we value the ball, shoot it and have some weapons out there, and for the most part share it."
Â
After returning from a four-game road trip where the Rams dropped three, they continue to hold a perfect 4-0 record at Moby Arena. They'll look to make it a fortress to play in and have a great opportunity to do so.
Â
Home is where Colorado State will be for the next four games, their longest homestand of the season. They'll continue to rebound from injuries and getting on opponents with their play – including another in-state matchup for their next affair against the Denver Pioneers.
Â
"Just continue the way we're playing, an attack and aggressive mindset, and definitely want to get a win," Hofschild said. "We've lost a few tough ones on the road, and we're back home and we're looking to get every win we possibly can."
