McKenna Hofschild scored a career-high 37 points

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – After trailing by 15 points, Colorado State battled back against the Mountain West defending champs and preseason favorite UNLV on Saturday night in Cox Pavilion, falling 91-88 in overtime. McKenna Hofschild led all scorers with 37 points on 10-of-17 shooting, including 16-of-21 from the charity stripe.

Colorado State started the game shooting just 36 percent from the floor on 4-of-11 shooting. UNLV couldn't miss, hitting 9-of-14 for a 64 mark. The Rebels built a 15-point lead entering the second quarter, but the Rams responded. CSU held UNLV without a field goal until 2:24 left in the half, while putting together a 20-1 run through the frame. Both teams traded baskets down the stretch as Colorado State led 43-39 at the break.

UNLV scored the first seven points of the third quarter to retake the lead, but it wouldn't hold for long. The Rams went on an 11-4 run to retake the lead and held it through the stretch. Colorado State shot 58 percent in the third quarter, including 4-for-5 from behind the arc. Destiny Thurman hit three-consecutive threes to give the Rams a 59-53 advantage.

Both teams traded baskets in the fourth as the neither team led by more than three. The end of regulation came down to making free throws as Hofschild drew 12 fouls, coming from driving to the basket.

In overtime, CSU didn't score until 2:38 left and that came from a Hofschild free throw to put the Rams within three at 85-82. The Rams were within two with 44 second left, but couldn't convert a basket down the stretch, forcing to foul and have UNLV shoot free throws.

Colorado State's starters did the heavy lifting, scoring all but the final point of the night as Kendyll Kinzer hit a deep three as time expired. The Rams turned the ball over 14 times leading to 14 points for UNLV.
