Colorado State Defeats San Jose State, 84-70

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Leading essentially throughout, the Colorado State women's basketball team kept the San Jose Spartans at bay Saturday afternoon with an 84-70 victory inside the Provident Credit Union Event Center.

The Rams pushed their lead to a dozen points early in the third quarter, but the home team cut it to eight by quarter's end and then the margin was just three points by the 6:06 mark of the final quarter. However, CSU proceeded to score six unanswered points going into the final media timeout. From there, the Rams were able secure the victory with the help of stellar free-throw shooting, going 11-of-12 down the stretch. In the whole game, CSU went an outstanding 30-of-31 from the free-throw line for the second-best percentage in school history.

The Rams notched their second sweep of a Mountain West opponent and improved to 16-7 overall with a 7-6 record in the MW. SJSU dropped to 4-19 overall and 1-11 in the conference.

"The composure and poise that our team displayed throughout the game was impressive and something we as a staff are very proud of," head coach Ryun Williams said. "I love our team's mentality. Sometimes shooting can deflate you, but I never felt that today on the bench. We were getting great shots. They stayed on the attack, showing our growth and maturity. Our team showed tremendous focus, which shows with what we did at the free-throw line. Overall, this was a great road win that we can build off for our next game at home against Wyoming."

Junior guard McKenna Hofschild tied her career-best 32 points, while dishing out seven assists. She passed Gritt Ryder (2013-14; 148 assists) and tied Deb Spickler (1981-82; 151 assist) on CSU's all-time single season assist list. Hofschild's backcourt mate, Upe Atosu, chipped in 22 points, while Karly Murphy added 14 points and seven rebounds.

From deep, it was not the Rams' day as they were 2-of-20 from 3-points land, but that makes their 84-point game that much more impressive. The free-throw line was the main difference in the game since both teams shot in the low 40% from the floor. CSU did own the rebound edge at 41-31 and had 44 paint points compared to SJSU's 28.

Next, the Rams will be back at home against Wyoming for the first season's meeting of the Border War, which will also be a Pink Out on Thursday with a 6 p.m. tip.
