Gizzi makes finals, Meitz, Leonard consolation finals

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – New day, new board, more placers for Colorado State women's swimming and diving.

Moving to the 1-meter board Friday at the Air Force Diving Invitational, freshman Lindsay Gizzi reached her second consecutive final, with teammates Jozie Meitz and Katie Leonard reaching the consolation final.

Gizzi qualified sixth for finals in the prelims, scoring a 264.50, then bettered her score in the evening session, remaining in sixth place with a score of 267.95 at the Cadet Natatorium. It was just 10 days ago Gizzi set the school record on the event at the venue, and while she dove well, CSU diving coach Chris Bergere felt she entered with high expectations.

"She did fine. I think she's a little upset she didn't light it up," Bergere said. "She needed this experience. She hasn't seen it all year, where there are a handful of kids better than her, national-level kids. She needed to see that to move forward. She'll be prepared for the Mountain West, which will be a tough field, but I think it was tougher here.

"I think the scoring was different. It was very stingy, because there were some national-level kids. Judging can be like that. She wasn't on her top game, not as sharp as she was at the meet against Air Force, and that upset her. She might have come in with the expectation she was going to light it up."

In the consolation finals, Leonard and Meitz grabbed the final two spots in preliminary qualifying. They both improved their position in the consolation rounds, Meitz placing 14th with a 233.50, with Leonard just behind her in 15th at 232.95. Teammate Jessica Albanna just missed, finishing 17th in the prelims with a 224.30, with Braeden Shaffer 21st at 220.50.

"I thought Katie dove super well, and Jozie dove very well," Bergere said. "They really competed, and it was great for them to get a second opportunity. I thought Jessica dove well, too. She missed one dive, or she would have been in there. As for the team, I think we've gotten a lot out of this meet."

Saturday concludes the event as the women take to the platform. The preliminaries begin at 10 a.m., with the consolation finals following immediately after. The finals are set to start at 2 p.m. Live scoring and a live stream are available.
