Rams to Play this Weekend in Women’s NIT
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Seeing UNLV confetti fall from the rafters after the Mountain West Championship game won't be the last memory for this season's Colorado State women's basketball team as they have accepted an invitation to the WNIT and will start play in the first round against Portland Friday at 8 p.m. in Portland, Ore.
Â
The winner between the Rams and the Pilots will advance to the second round and face either Long Beach State or Oregon State.
Â
Colorado State holds a 21-11 overall record after going 9-9 in the conference season and then 3-1 in the MW Tournament en route to the conference title game where they fell 75-65 to the regular-season champion Lady Rebels. The season marks the sixth time head coach Ryun Williams has eclipsed the 20-win mark and first since the 2017-18 campaign.
Â
Portland was selected to the WNIT for the first time since 2009 following a 19-10 season and an 8-7 record in the West Coast Conference. In the conference tournament, the Pilots defeated Loyola Marymount in the quarterfinals before falling to No. 15 BYU in the semis.
Â
The Rams will be in the WNIT for the seventh time in program history and the fifth time under head coach Ryun Williams. The last WNIT appearance came in 2017-18 when defeated Western Illinois at home and then lost to South Dakota in Vermillion, S.D. The season prior to that, CSU defeated Saint Mary's and then lost to UC Davis by one point in the second round at Moby Arena. Â
Â
All-Mountain West recipients McKenna Hofschild and Upe Atosu led the Rams in scoring in the MW Tournament, scoring 19.25 and 16.0 points per game, respectively, with each earning All-MW Tournament honors. Atosu also was named MW Newcomer of the Year prior to the conference tournament.
