Shootaround: Dion Not An Option to Eat Up Long Delay

Rams, Cowgirls meet for third time 19 days

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – They were on the bus to head to practice by 9:30 a.m.

They were back on the bus back to the hotel by 11 a.m. From the back, Petra Farkas notified her team about the cold, hard truth.

"We still have 9 hours and 24 minutes before we play," she said.

With so much time to kill before tipping off with Wyoming, what's a team to do?

Head coach Ryun Williams had an idea, but it might have been all about him.

"Well, I was going to hit Celine Dion, but she's not playing, I don't think. Adele?" Williams said, turning down the option of Katy Perry with lightning speed.

Williams is a huge Dion fan, but what about the team?

"I think there would be mixed emotions," Karly Murphy said. "I'd be fine with it. I know it would make coach happy. He'd be thriving, because he loves Celine so much."

While Williams was worried about weaving the team through the day until an 8:30 p.m. tipoff, Murphy wasn't concerned. Her plan was a bit of a homework, relax and watch some film and start to mentally prepare. But Williams didn't want his team lounging around all day, either, so they all went to Caesars Palace.

If you can't see Dion, might as well walk around her old stomping grounds.

"These long days, they're just different. We aren't used to that," Williams said. "We play a lot of early games, a lot of 6 p.m. tips and that sort. The prep is we know what Wyoming is going to do. Wyoming knows what we're going to do. It's who is going to execute the best. It's kind of get the  kids back, get some rest, reset, regroup, reenergize and get hungry again and come out here and hopefully play as well as we did (Sunday)."

The Series: The Border War series was a split this season, and on top of that, the games were played just 13 days apart. Each team won at home, the Rams taking a 56-45 decision, the Cowgirls 69-63 in overtime.

What to Watch from the Rams: McKenna Hofschild has been in double figures both games against the Cowgirls while averaging 8.5 assists per game. What the Rams have to combat is Wyoming's superiority on the glass, getting outrebounded by at least 10 in both games.

What to Watch from the Cowgirls: Tommi Olson has been their leading scorer in both outings, but in the Fort Collins game, not a single Wyoming player hit double figures. Olson paced four Cowgirls in double digits in Laramie.

Of Note: Hofschild broke the single-season record for assists, now standing at 193 … Karly Murphy moved into the top 10 in rebounding in a single year. She now has 251, tied with Melissa Dennett for 8th all time. Two rebounds moves her past Jennifer Halbach, nine would move her past Katie Cronin into sixth. … The team split the shootaround today, getting 25 minutes to start at Thomas & Mack, the final 25 at Cox Pavilian. … Colorado State is 5-1 against Wyoming in Mountain West Tournament play.
