Both Ram Squads Place Second After Exciting Finish to MW Championships
5/15/2022 12:02:00 AM | Track & Field
CSU men obtain their ninth top-3 finish at MW outdoor, while the Ram women have 10 straight podium finishes
CLOVIS, Calif. – For the first time since 2018, neither Colorado State track and field team are returning to Fort Collins with a trophy, however both the men and women were still in it going into the meet's final race – the 4x400-meter relay – Saturday night in the final day of the 2022 Mountain West Outdoor Track & Field Championship at Veteran's Memorial Stadium.
Â
Nonetheless, both Ram squads finished runner-up by margins less than five points. For the men tallied 207 points, trailing 4.5 points to champion Air Force. The women scored 153.5 points for second behind San Diego State's 157.5. The top-3 finish for the men makes it nine times in a row and 16 out of the possible 22 MW outdoor meets. The ladies' top-3 streak is at 10 with 19 out of the 22 tries. Â Â
Â
Going into the 4x4, the men trailed the Falcons by 7.5, while the women trailed the Aztecs by a mere 1.5. Both teams were in striking distance, but perfect scenarios were needed. The Ram men foursome crossed in second to USAFA's fourth, and in the women's race, the Aztec and Rams went 1-2. Not enough magic this May.
Â
Throughout the day, the Rams were routinely sending student-athletes to the podium by the finish line. The women had three event champions (Lauren Gale, 400m; Michaela Hawkins, discus; Yolonda Johnson, 400mH). The men captured six event titles (Jackson Morris, javelin and discus; Jacob Brueckman, 1500m; Eldridge Harris, pole vault; Kelley Stephens, 100m; Ryan Birkmeier, 800m).
Â
In addition to the champion podium visits, the women three other All-MW showings, while the men had eight.
