22 individual All-Mountain West awards plus three relay nods for Colorado State
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Twenty Colorado State track and field student-athletes combined for 24 individual All-Mountain West indoor honors, while all three CSU relay teams also gained honors, announced by the league office Thursday.
Â
The all-conference team is made up of the top three finishers in each event. Four student-athletes picked up two nods for their individual performances in Clovis, Calif. at the Mountain West Championships. Factoring in the relays, Lauren Gale collected a team-high four total All-MW honors. The 27 total awards to CSU was the most in the conference.
Â
On the men's side, Kelley Stephens (100m, 1st; 200m, 2nd) and Jackson Morris (Javelin, 1st; Discus, 1st) went home with two medals apiece. For Morris, the two podium visits were his sixth and seventh in his career, but first championships, while the performances were Stephens' first All-MW results.
Â
Gale obtained her two All-MW honors from the 200 and 400, winning the latter. In the indoor season, she already became the first ever to go 5-for-5 in MW 400-meter races between indoor and outdoor MW championships, but now it is 6-for-6. The two new All-MW nods put her career number at eight individual All-MW awards. As a part of the second place 4x100 and 4x400-meter relay teams, Gale added two more to put her career All-MW relay count to six.
Â
Gabi McDonald captured the shot put title along with finishing runner-up in the discus to earn two all-conference medals. The shot put win completed the sweep on the season for the conference as McDonald also won the event at the indoor meet. McDonald contains five career All-MW honors with three coming from the shot put.
Â
Three other Rams earned two awards with one being an individual event and the other a relay. Yolonda Johnson won the 400m hurdles as the first Ram to do so since Megan Addy in 2001 and then also ran the first leg of the 4x4. Johnson's 400mH title marked her first individual all-conference medal, while the relay nod is her fifth all-time. Ryan Birkmeier captured the 800m title for his first All-MW accolade and was the third leg in the 4x4 for his second career relay medal. Jack Cauble placed third in the 200 and anchored the men's 4x4 – both first times on the conference podium.
Â
Of the six women honored in the individual awards, two (Johnson, Michaela Hawkins; discus champion) were first-time recipients, while Tayla Brunger, running in the 4x100, also gained her first all-conference finish. Veteran Tarynn Sieg (Bown) earned her ninth all-time All-MW medal after placing second in the hammer throw.
Â
For the men, only four (Drew Thompson, Cauble, Birkmeier, Stephens) of the 14 honored were first-time recipients. Mariano Kis won his third-straight MW shot put title between indoor and outdoor, which is a feat only done by former Ram Mostafa Hassan who won six in a row. Eldridge Harris (pole vault) and Jacob Brueckman (1500) earned their second all-conference nods in championship fashion. Adam Dawson made it 3-for-3 in finishing on the podium for the discus in his career. In the long jump, Isa Bynum got his fifth All-MW accolade in the event and third for outdoor. Also in the jumps, Allam Bushara continued his streak of reaching the podium for the triple jump to three conference meets after his runner-up jump.
Â
Both Colorado State programs finished runner-up in the team standings. The CSU women have a streak of 10 top-3 finishes, while the men are close behind with nine in a row.Â
