Just three shots separated second from seventh in the tightly-bunched field, as the junior recorded her top career finish
VERONA, Wis. – In a tightly-bunched field at the top of the leaderboard, Colorado State finished seventh at the Badger Invitational, Sept. 18-20. The three-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by the University of Wisconsin, was played at University Ridge Golf Course (Par 72 – 6,248 yards) in Verona, Wis.
Â
Under dark and cloudy skies that eventually turned into a 100-minute lightning delay, Colorado State battled five other teams that finished separated by just three shots from second to seventh. The Rams finished at 13-over 877 in seventh after a final round 5-over 293. Nebraska won the tournament at 1-under 863, with Notre Dame and Old Dominion tied for second at 10-over 874. North Florida, Wisconsin and Washington State tied for fourth, one shot ahead of CSU at 12-over 876.
Â
"Our team has competing very well this week with some strong Power-5 schools," head coach Laura Cilek said. "They have worked hard and been extremely coachable. I know they wish they could have a few shots back to finish in second place, but I am confident we have our best golf ahead. This group is special and we have had so much fun this trip. We are looking forward to teeing it up at home next week!"
Â
Individually, the Rams were led by junior Panchalika Arphamongkol (aka "Friendly") with her top collegiate finish, placing third at 4-under 212 after a career-best 3-under 69 in the final round. For the day, she had four birdies and one bogey en route to posting her second top-5 and seventh top-20 career finish in just 14 tournaments. Her 212 was also a 54-hole career-low by eight shots and tied for the 10th lowest 54-hole total and 10th lowest 54-hole versus par in CSU history. She was three shots behind co-medalists Leigha Devine of Rutgers and Notre Dame's Montgomery Ferreira at 7-under 209.
Â
Junior Sofia Torres tied for 16th at 3-over 219, her sixth career top-20 finish at CSU. Senior Andrea Bergsdottir tied for 37th at 9-over 225, with sophomore Lacey Uchida in 46th at 11-over 227. Senior Gabby Minier was the final Ram at 13-over 229 in a tie for 48th.
Â
"Friendly with a third-place finish in a strong field was a great way to start the season," Cilek continued. "She has put in a lot of work in the off season and it is awesome to see her hard work pay off."
Â
CSU returns to the course on Monday-Tuesday, Sept. 26-27, hosting the Colonel Wollenberg Ptarmigan Ram Classic at Ptarmigan Country Club in Fort Collins, Colo. The event is free and open to the public as both days will start at 9 am with shotgun starts.
