Rams Open Second Half with Road Double Dual

Team set to face North Texas, Northern Arizona on Friday
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The team hasn't seen competition for more than a month, which isn't an anomaly for collegiate swim teams, and Colorado State coach Christopher Woodard has learned to read his team upon its return from the holiday break. There are going to be some illnesses to contend with – 'tis the season – and this particular year's weather led to some travel debacles.
Â
The first day back started as a skeleton crew, but three swimmers who had flights delayed walked onto the deck an hour late and joined the fray, their suitcases sitting in the locker room.
Â
"They didn't even go home first, just came here and jumped into practice," head coach Christopher Woodard said. "That's encouraging. That's the culture that's been developing with this team."
Â
The Rams will travel to Flagstaff, Ariz., this Friday for a double dual against North Texas and Northern Arizona at the Lumberjacks' Aquatic and Tennis Complex. The meet begins at 3 p.m.
Â
Colorado State is out to extend its dual winning streak, which currently stands at 20, the second-longest run in program history, with a 6-0 start to the campaign. North Texas enters the weekend at 3-1, having won three duals in succession, starting with a win over New Mexico. Host Northern Arizona, the defending WAC champion, is 5-0 on the year. The teams are two the Rams haven't faced often, but have had success gain, owning a 2-0 mark with the Mean Green and 8-2 with the Lumberjacks.
Â
"We don't get to see them too often," Woodard said. "Northern Arizona is a good team. We were supposed to be the first meet in their new facility, but there was a delay, so we were the last meet in their old one. This will be a good test for us because NAU has a good group of distance swimmers, divers and some IMers."
Â
The meet represents the beginning of the end-of-season push, as the Rams will take on four teams in a dual format two weeks later at Air Force, then come back a week later to face Northern Colorado in Greeley. The divers will have an additional competition at Air Force on Feb. 2-3, all with the common goal of the Mountain West Championships in mind Feb. 15-18 in Houston.
Â
For Woodard, the next six weeks is the time to polish the little details to be ready for the final meet.
Â
"We have to work on our race strategy and do it during practice," Woodard said. "The first half of the season was the buildup. Now we have to start working on the finer details for our races. If I see somebody breathing into a wall or not working at the right pace, they're going to hear about it."
