Buzkova cracks top 10 in career doubles victories

SALT LAKE CITY – The first day of play is in the books, and so is Radka Buzkova once again.

Colorado State's women's tennis team began the ITA Mountain Regional on Wednesday at the University of Utah, and when Buzkova and partner Victoria Erechtchenko advanced in the main doubles draw with an 8-5 win against Idaho's Diana Khaydarshina and Rachelle Starreveld, it marked the 47th career victory with a partner for Buzkova. That puts her in a tie for 10th all-time at CSU with Dasha Zhurin.

The tournament's opening day featured a round of doubles and singles, with the Rams winning three doubles matches to begin the event. Zara Lennon and Sarah Weekley beat Betina Tokac and Ellen Puzak of Colorado, 8-4; Sarka Richterova and Viktoryia Zhadzinskaya advanced with an 8-7 (2) over Weber State's Sicely Ferreira and Dylan Lolofie.

"We've been working on our style of doubles play in practice, so it was nice to see them gets some wins on the first day," CSU head coach Mai-Ly Tran said.

Singles play followed, with the Rams split between the two draws. The main draw did not go well for the team, as they dropped all four matches. In the B Draw, doubles partners Richterova and Zhadzinskaya both had to rally after dropping the first set to advance in the bracket.

Richterova had to slug it out in the second set to start her comeback, eventually topping Olivia Mikkelson of Idaho State 3-6, 7-6 (10), 6-2. Zhadzinskaya's win came over a Mountain West foe, bettering New Mexico's Leonie Hoppe 2-6, 7-5, 6-4.

"Sarka's match was a unique battle. Her opponent played very well, and Sarka stayed calm, steady and composed throughout the match," Tran said. "She found a way to break down her opponent, and I am pleased to see how she trusted herself in big moments.

"Vika came back from a set and down 5-2 to beat a tough opponent. She never gave up and continued to play aggressive and take it one point at a time. She showed incredible fight, and I'm so happy to see her pull that one out."

Thursday will continue with play in the championship bracket, with doubles matches set to begin at 8:30 a.m. Singles matches are set to follow in the next few rounds. On Friday, consolation play will start.
