New pairing reaches Round of 16 at regional
SALT LAKE CITY – Paired together for the first time for a big event, the tandem of Radka Buzkova and Victoria Erechtchenko have proven to be quick studies.
Â
Learning how the other plays and how they compliment the other best. They were first tested as a duo at the ITA All-American Championships, where they went 4-2 overall in two draws against some of the best competition in the country. They've extended their run of play at the University of Utah, winning Thursday to advance to the Round of 16 in the main doubles draw at the ITA Mountain Regional.
Â
"Radka and Vici have momentum from All-American and are a great team together," CSU head coach Mai-Ly Tran said. "They were able to get the win despite not feeling their best today."
Â
They were the only one of three CSU doubles teams to advance, posting an 8-4 win over Mountain West rival Ryan Kershner and Bhakti Shah of Boise State. They'll see another familiar foe across the net in the next round, facing Wyoming's Violetta Borodina and Sophie Zehender.
Â
In the other doubles matches, the Rams dropped results to teams from Denver. Andrea Beltran and Britt Pursell topped Sarka Richterova and Viktoryia Zhadzinskaya, 8-1; Caroline Driscoll and Anastasia Simonov defeated Zara Lennon and Sarah Weekley 8-7 (5).
Â
The Rams had two singles players in the B Draw, both of whom fell into the consolation bracket. Anya Nelson of Colorado defeated  Richterova 6-4, 7-6 (4), while Lola O'Lideadha of Idaho State clipped Zhadzinskaya 7-5, 6-4.
Â
"Our team keeps leaving it all out on the court, and we've been faced with how to respond when it doesn't go our way," Tran said. "They've been resilient and hungry for the next opportunity to compete."
Â
Championship play will continue Friday, with consolation matches being mixed following. Play is set to begin at 8:30 a.m.
