ERIE – Returning to their home state, Colorado State men's golf has itself in contention following the first day of the Mark Simpson Colorado Invite. CSU and fellow Mountain West member Nevada sit at 10-under, 566 through 36 holes. Eight strokes back of leader San Francisco.
The dynamic duo of Christoph Bleier and Connor Jones had strong days at Colorado National Golf Club sitting in a tie for seventh and third, respectively. Jones finished the first round tied for the lead shooting a 5-under, 67. He birdied the second and third hole helping propel him to a 2-under 34 on the front nine. He recorded two birdies, a bogey and eagle on the 696 yard par 5 15th to reach 5-under.
Jones recorded four more birdies and bogeys over the second 18 as the wind kicked up during the afternoon.
Bleier posted back-to-back 70s on day one. Following a bogey-free front nine with three birdies, Bleier had an up and down back nine to end up at 2-under. He once again started the second round strong with three birdies over the first four holes before coming in with a 1-over, 37 on the back nine.
Sophomore Matthew Wilkinson had a strong second round shooting 4-under, 68. The Centennial native had an up and down first round finishing it 4-over. His short-term memory helped him throw six birdies and an eagle on his second round scorecard. The round propelled him into a tie for 30th as he's even through 36 holes.
Colorado State will tee off with San Francisco, UTEP and Nevada in Tuesdays final round starting at 8:10 am.
