Rams Make History With First Win Against Cowgirls

Colorado State rides eighth shutout to season closing win

LARAMIE, Wyo. - Plenty of bad blood in the annual Border War matchup between the Rams and the Cowgirls, even more so when you consider the fact that Wyoming (6-8-5, MW: 2-7-2) had never lost to Colorado State (11-5-3, MW: 6-3-2) in its previous 10 matchups. That streak is no more after the Rams finished their regular season with a 1-0 win over the Cowgirls.

The lone goal for the Rams came early in the first half when Olivia Fout found the boot of freshman Mia Casey who put it in with style. The goal was the fifth of the year for Casey who is now tied for most goals scored by a freshman in program history.

Wyoming did not muster a shot on goal through the first 45 minutes, but found a better groove in the second half, testing Shayna Ross three times in the final frame.

While Wyoming had chances on numerous occasions in the second half including one shot that ricocheted off two posts before finding its way out of the box, they never found the back of the net as the Rams held on to complete the eighth shutout of the season. That mark is good enough to be tied second-most all time behind the team in 2019. Ross has been in net for every match this season for Colorado State as she now slides into sole possession of second most shutouts by a goalie in a single season surpassing Hunter Peifer in 2018.

Colorado State earned its 11th win of the season against Wyoming which puts them one behind the program record of 12 set in 2019. They will have a chance to tie that mark when they play their first match of the Mountain West Tournament on Sunday.

Sunday will be the first appearance for the Rams in the conference tournament since 2021. The Rams will await an opponent that will be determined when all Mountain West matches are finished on Thursday night. Colorado State will look for their first conference tournament win with a chance to shake it off on Sunday at 2 p.m. The match can be streamed at themw.com/watch.
