Rams Comeback Falls Short at San Diego State

2/16/2023 9:08:00 PM | Women's Basketball

Colorado State trailed by as many as 16 points in the second half before getting within a possession late in the fourth quarter

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Colorado State's offense was quiet for the first 20 minutes but responded in the second half nearly wiping out a 16-point San Diego State lead before falling 53-49 in Viejas Arena. The Rams are now 2-7 in games decided by five-or-fewer points this season.

McKenna Hofschild led all scorers with 19 points, while also dishing out five assists and drawing seven of SDSU's 10 total fouls. Sydney Mech added nine points and Cali Clark pulled down seven boards. Colorado State finished shooting 35.2 percent on 19-of-54 and 18.5 percent from deep – 5-of-27. The free throw line was the biggest difference with CSU going 6-of-8 and SDSU almost tripling the amount at 16-of-23.

Colorado State's offense started sluggish, missing its first 14 three-point attempts. Hannah Ronsiek broke the deep-ball drought in the second quarter making a trey with 4:11 left – one-of-two made baskets for CSU in the second quarter. The Rams finished the first half shooting 6-of-28 and 1-of-16 from 3-point range. CSU started the second quarter going scoreless for the first five minutes as well as the last four minutes of the half.

The Rams' offense showed some signs of life in the third, stringing together a 9-0 run midway through to get within seven points after trailing by as many as 16 earlier in the quarter. CSU's shooting from behind the arc continued to suffer, hitting 1-of-5 from deep, but was 6-of-13 from the floor.

In the final frame Colorado State trimmed the Aztec lead to three with 2:11 left to play and again with 1:12 left. CSU shot its best quarter in the final one, hitting 7-of-13 from the floor and 3-of-6 from behind the arc, which included starting the frame with back-to-back treys.

The Rams had two looks late in the game but missed both 3-point attempts while keeping SDSU without a basket from the floor for the last 7:43 of the game. The Aztecs scored six points from the charity stripe during the drought.

Colorado State will have a quick turnaround, having to head back home to host Air Force for a Saturday game at 1:00 p.m.
