CSU breaks another losing streak

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The feat is becoming commonplace for Mai-Ly Tran's teams.

For the first time in the Colorado State women's tennis program's history, the Rams defeated Brigham Young. Which followed last week's first win over Nebraska. And last year's first victory against Colorado.

It was an exciting and nerve-racking Friday evening at the Fort Collins Country Club. The won 4-3 after dropping the first 19 meetings with BYU. The Rams first met the Cougars in 1975 and saw them four times in the Mountain West Tournament, with three of those times being in the quarterfinals. Today, Zara Lennon clinched the battle in her No. 4 singles play.

"It's always nice to find out that we've beaten a team for the first time," Tran said. "They are consistently good, so it puts out team's level into perspective."

The doubles action was tied 1-all, with No. 1 Radka Buzkova and Emily Dush losing 6-4 and No. 2 Lennon and Ky Ecton winning 6-3. Viktoryia Zhadzinskaya and Sarka Richterova pulled through at the No. 3 spot with a 6-4 win over Jacque Dunyon and Kara Lin from BYU to secure the doubles point.

"I think our doubles teams have really grown as pairs and they trust each other," Tran said. "Doubles are crucial to set the tone for a match."

Singles is where the magic happened. Dush defeated BYUs Emilee Astle 6-3, 6-2 and Buzkova won 6-2, 6-3, this pulled the Rams ahead 3-1. The Cougars won the other singles matches ultimately tying the score at 3. It was all up to Lennon. She beat Tina Li 6-4 and then had a long battle to get the 7-5 victory.

"Zara knows what she's capable of and has really embraced the big moments, it's fun to watch her step up at these times," Tran said. "We felt very confident in her to clinch the match for us and now it's time to prepare for another good team."

The Rams next dual is Monday, against Brown at 12:30 p.m. at the Denver Tennis Park.
