Day two of the Mountain West Championship Meet is another success for the Rams
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Colorado State track and field team had another successful day at the Mountain West Championship meet Friday afternoon as the women's team remains in first place in the standings with 66.50 points and the men climbed up to second place with 45 points.
Â
Senior Drew Thompson got things off to a hot start for the Rams in day two of the men's heptathlon. Entering the day in second place, following only his teammate Elijah Scott, Thompson had a career-best day all around in order to win the men's pentathlon with a total of 5,281 points.
Â
Thompson started the day finishing third in the men's 60-meter hurdles, taking over first place from teammate Scott. Moving into the pole vault event, Thompson knew he was going to have to have a season-best performance to maintain his spot in first. A season-best performance it was as he cleared 4.10 meters, breaking his own personal record. Heading into the final event, Thompson found himself trailing Air Force's Braedon Holcombe by just four points. Things all came down to the final event in the 1,000-meter run.
Â
With the entire Albuquerque Convention Center knowing the race would come down to these two athletes, Thompson and Holcombe broke away from the pack in a one-on-one battle for first place. On the final lap, Thompson found an extra kick and made the outside move on Holcombe that was enough to earn Thompson gold by a ten-point margin.
Â
Thompson's heptathlon win paired with Lexie Keller's gold finish from yesterday's heptathlon is the first time the Rams have won both multi events since 2007. Teammate Elijah Scott finished third in the event with 5,148 total points, a personal best for him as well.
Â
Sophomore Mya Lesnar kept the Rams on top of the podium with a career best performance in the women's weight throw as the newest addition to the Rams' throwing team threw a mark of 20.68 meters, which moves Lesnar into the top five all-time in women's weight throw and earned her first place. Teammate Michaela Hawkins also podiumed for the Rams as the senior threw a mark of 18.65 meters, good for third place in the conference.
Â
Junior Eldridge Harris rounds out the golden Rams from day two of the championship meet as the pole vaulter placed first with a season best clearance of 5.15 meters. Harris defends his pole vault title from the 2022 Outdoor Mountain West Championship last season.
Â
Sophomore Taye Raymond scored six points for the Rams as she podiumed in the women's long jump with a personal best mark of 6.25 meters. Raymond finished third for the Rams in her first Mountain West Championship meet.
Â
Friday was full of qualifying rounds in nearly every track event with ten different Rams punching their ticket to championship Saturday by qualifying as one of the eight fastest times in their event. Final heats of track events will all take place Saturday.
