Â
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The indoor track and field season is beginning to hit its crescendo as the Colorado State track and field teams are set to compete against the best athletes in the conference at the Mountain West Championship meet this Thursday through Saturday in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The meet will span over three days, the longest meet the Rams have competed in this season, with events starting Thursday at 10 a.m.
Â
Thursday will kick off with the men's heptathlon, where a pair of Rams, Mauricio Galinda Vega and Elijah Scott, currently hold the number one and number two ranks in the Mountain West. In the women's heptathlon, senior Lexie Keller not only leads the conference but holds the third best score in the country so far this season. Keller will be competing in her hometown of Albuquerque for both the Mountain West Championship and the NCAA Championships in March upon qualifying.
Â
Shortly following the multi events, the men's and women's 5,000 meters will take place. On the women's side, Sarah Carter and Annabel Stafford are aiming to keep their recent momentum going as they both shattered the school record in the 5,000 meters at the recent Husky Invitational. On the men's side, the Rams will be represented by Mason Brown and Thomas Chaston.
Â
Friday and Saturday will be the busiest days of the meet, with event start times spanning from 10 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Friday and 9:30 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. Saturday.
Â
The historically competitive CSU throwing team will not have to wait long to see their chance at competition, with the men's weight throw starting at 12:30 p.m. Friday. Much of the focus of this event will be on Mariano Kis. Throughout the season, Kis has consistently been ranked at the top of the Mountain West and has shown no signs of slowing down, ranking first in the shot put and second in the weight throw.
Â
The women's throwing team will have some time to wait before they see the field, but when they do, Mya Lesnar will look to take control in her Mountain West Conference debut. Lesnar holds the top spot in the conference in the weight throw, with teammate Michaela Hawkins not far behind, as she holds the third best mark in the Mountain West. Lesnar and Hawkins will both be huge parts in the Rams' women team looking to defend their Mountain West title from last season.
Â
Following the men's weight throw Friday, Taye Raymond will make her Mountain West Championship debut for Colorado State. Raymond will be competing in the 60 meters, 200 meters, and her specialty, the long jump. In the long jump, Raymond is ranked second in the Mountain West but hopes to land the top spot on the podium.
Â
The Rams will also attract much attention in the men's and women's 60-meter hurdles, beginning at 2:00 p.m. Friday. Germain Barnes and Cole Nordman are both ranked in the top five for this event and are quickly followed by freshman Vincent Flegeance. Jahzara Davis and Neya Jamison will be representing Colorado State on the women's side, with Davis leading this pack in the Mountain West standings.
Â
The events on Friday will conclude at 4:15 p.m. with the women's high jump final.
Â
Saturday will begin with the men's high jump final, and that theme will remain prevalent throughout the day. The only events that will have both a trial and a final on this day will be the men's shot put, the women's triple jump, the men's triple jump, and the women's shot put. The last event of the day is the men's 4x400 relay.
Â
While Colorado State as a team will look to be hoisting a Mountain West Championship trophy by the end of the weekend, individual Rams also have the eyes set on qualifying for the NCAA Championships, taking place in Albuquerque March 10 and 11.
