CSU drops both in first weekend of conference play
FRESNO, Cali. – The Rams were the highest-ranked team as conference play began this weekend in the Mountain West, sitting at No. 42. The tension was high at the detached site as the second dual of conference play unfolded Sunday, the rivalry between CSU and Wyoming taking place in Fresno, Calif., without a home crowd to back either side.
Â
At the end, the Rams were defeated by the Cowgirls 4-1, as Colorado State fell to 11-4 overall, 0-2 in conference play.
Â
"I don't think the neutral site helped the border war competition," head coach Mai-Ly Tran said. "Of course, we wish we could've played that at home in front of our wonderful fans."
Â
In doubles play at the No. 3 spot, Sarka Richterova and Viktoryia Zhadzinskaya came out on top over Noesjka Brink and Nikol Dobrilova, winning 6-4. But Wyoming earned the doubles point as Radka Buzkova and Luana Avelar fell to Ana Fernandez and Sophie Zehender 6-2 at No. 1; while at No. 2, Ky Ecton and Zara Lennon lost to Violetta Borodina and Maria Oreshkina 6-3.
Â
"I think we had a difficult time bouncing back after yesterday's loss to Fresno State," Tran said. "We could've responded better as a team, but I believe we still had many victories that are not measurable throughout the weekend."
Â
At singles, Zhadzinskaya was the only Ram to come out with a win against the Cowgirls. She defeated Fernandez 6-3, 6-0 at the No. 6 spot.
Â
"Vika stepped up to the occasion and played very well in doubles and single," Tran said, "We're very happy she got an opportunity to play in singles and she did a fantastic job."
Â
At the No. 2 spot, Lennon fell to Oreshkina 6-0, 6-4, No. 3 Weekley lost to Brink 6-2, 7-6, and No. 5 Avelar was defeated by Dobrilova 6-4, 6-2. Buzkova and Richterova had unfinished singles matches. No. 1 Buzkova was paired with Zehender, who was up 7-6, 4-1, while at No. 4 Richterova was playing Borodina and ended with the scores of 6-1, 1-6, 3-5.
Â
"These losses will sting but we know we are much better than this weekend," Tran said.
