Christoph Bleier ties for Mountain West Championship lowest score, falls in playoff
TUCSON, Ariz. – Sophomore Christoph Bleier completed a historic Mountain West Championship on Sunday falling in a playoff to San Diego State's Dylan Oyama for the individual medalist.
Bleier matched the program's record for lowest individual round with a 9-under, 63 to close out the tournament. It is the second time this year has as posted a 63. He finished the championship at 19-under, with a total score of 197. It is just the seventh time a score below 200 has been posted by a Ram. The 197 by Bleier and Oyama also set the Mountain West Championship record. His 63 Sunday is the second-lowest score ever for a MW Championship.
He shot a 5-under, 31 on the front nine, including a bogey. He came into the clubhouse and with a 3-under 32, posting an eagle and a pair of birdies. One of those birdies was on the 18th. Bleier and Oyama returned to the 18th hole for the playoff with Bleier recording a bogey and Oyama a par to claim the medalist title.
For the second straight day Colorado State went low as a team. CSU shot a 10-under, 278 to finish in fourth place. The Rams concluded the tournament with an aggregate score of 835 to be 29 shots under par.
Joining Bleier inside the top 20 were Connor Jones (16th) and Davis Bryant (T18th). Bryant fired off his second straight round in the red with a 4-under, 68. He finished the tournament at 3-under, two shots behind Jones.
The 23rd-ranked Rams now wait for the NCAA Selection Show on Wednesday to find out where they are headed for regionals May 15-17. The show will air on the Golf Channel at 11 am MT.
