Colorado State Surges through Day Two of Mountain West Championships

Thompson wins decathlon, McDonald and Kis both win shot put
FRESNO, Calif. – The Colorado State Track and Field team finished day two of the Mountain West Outdoor Championship meet with both the men's and women's team still in contention of a team championship on championship Saturday, tomorrow. The women's team exits day two in first place with 83 team points and the men's team sits in second place with 74.5 team points.

Friday morning was kicked off with the conclusion of both the women's heptathlon and men's decathlon with three Rams medaling across the two events. Senior Lexie Keller won the first medal of the day for Colorado State after placing second in the heptathlon with a score of 5,561 points. Keller, a three-time All-American in combined events will take her season best score of 5,561 into the NCAA Mountain Region meet in two week in Sacramento as she now ranks within the top 25 in the country.

Following the heptathlon, four Rams completed the second half of events in the decathlon Friday morning with Drew Thompson absolutely dominating. Thompson claimed the lead in the decathlon after event one yesterday morning and never relinquished it, winning six of the ten events en route to becoming the 2023 Mountain West Decathlon Champion, defending his crown in the heptathlon from the indoor season. Thompson recorded personal bests in the 100 meter dash, 400 meter, 110 meter hurdles, discus throw and javelin throw.

Teammate Elijah Scott ran a PR in the final event of the decathlon, the 1500 meter run, in order to climb his way to the podium and place third with a final score of 6,866 points. Sophomore Cameron Collins finished seventh with a decathlon personal best score of
6,149 points and freshman Mateo Munoz finished eighth.

Gabi McDonald and the Colorado State throws team kept team momentum in favor of the Rams when McDonald won the women's shot put, defending her Mountain West Outdoor title from last season with a throw of 17.17 meters. McDonald's first throw of the competition would be the winning throw as she sets an outdoor personal best mark. Three Rams scored points for the women's team in the shot put event including Mya Lesnar claiming bronze with a mark of 16.98 meters and Michaela Hawkins placing eighth with a mark of 15.22, just shy of her personal best.

The Rams boasted a champion in the men's shot put as well as Mariano Kis also defended his outdoor title by claiming gold with a monster throw of 18.27 meters, an outdoor best for the junior. Friday was only Mariano's second time throwing shot put this outdoor season as he spent the beginning part of the season coming back from injury, but there was no sign of injury as he stood on top of the podium Friday night.

The Rams women's team also saw point production in the women's pole vault as Celyn Stermer brought home the bronze medal with a clearance of 3.94 meters followed close behind by teammates Maria Kimpson who places fourth clearing 3.84 and Olivia Bollenbacher who placed sixth clearing 3.73. Overall, Colorado State gained 14 points from the pole vault competition.

Ten Rams took part in Friday's preliminary heats and qualified for Saturday's finals heats including Jahzara Davis and Lexie Keller in the women's 100 meter hurdles, Vincent Flegeance, Germain Barnes, Cole Nordman and Carsen Bruns all advancing in the men's 110 meter hurdles, Anna Petr qualifying in the women's 1500 meter run, Tom Willems in the men's 400 meter and Taye Raymond in the women's 100 meter dash and Tyler Colwell and Cole Nordman in the men's 100 meter dash.

Championship Saturday is set to kick off in the afternoon at 2 p.m. mountain time with the women's discus throw.
