McDonald, Kovatch and Carter all qualify for NCAA Championship Meet

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Colorado State track and field team finished its time at the NCAA West Regional on a high note Saturday afternoon as the final day in Sacramento finished with three Rams punching their tickets to the NCAA Championship meet taking place in Austin, Texas June 7-10. Both Gabi McDonald and Klaire Kovatch qualified in the women's discus with Sarah Carter qualifying and setting a school record in the women's 5,000 meter run.

Starting out the day well, Colorado State claimed two tickets to Austin in the women's discus throw as McDonald finished second in the region with a top throw of 58.67 meters and Kovatch placed fourth with a top mark of 55.55 meters. Both athletes accomplished the feat on their third and final throws of the competition, climbing the rankings and clinching their spot in the national championship meet.

"Gabi and Klaire both had a big third round to say the least," Head Coach Brian Bedard said. "They went from not qualifying to finishing second and fourth while earning a trip to NCAA's. I'm really proud of their poise under pressure and after Gabi hit her throw, I think it inspired Klaire to finish with a big throw too."

In total, five athletes from the Colorado State throws team will continue their season at the NCAA Championship Meet in two weeks. Both Michaela Hawkins and Mya Lesnar competed in the discus as well, finishing their seasons in 15th and 47th respectively.

Carter clinched the third spot of the day in the women's 5K as she not only finished in ninth place, but she also set a school record in the process. Coming in with a time of 15:44.20, Carter now holds the school record for both the indoor and outdoor 5K as she advanced to the national championship meet.

"We are so proud of Sarah. This race was really special," cross country and distance Head Coach Kelly Hart said. "She channeled frustration from her first race this weekend in a really productive way and came into the 5K on a mission. We are so lucky to have her, Annabel, and the rest of the Rams representing us at nationals."

Teammates Claire Hengesbaugh and Lauren Neugeboren both finished 25th and 31st respectively.

Colorado State senior Sharde Johnson finished her season and career in a Ram uniform competing in the women's high jump after placing first at the 2023 Outdoor Mountain West Championship meet two weeks ago. She finished her time at the West Regional Meet with a top mark of 1.67 meters, placing 42nd.

Freshman triple jumper Jo-Anna Pinnock also finished her season Saturday afternoon as she placed 45th in the women's triple jump with a top jump of 12.00 meters. The freshman finishes a sensational rookie year after breaking the women's triple jump school record earlier this season.

The Colorado State track and field team now totals seven athletes who will compete at the NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas June 7-10.
