Rams Remain on Front Range for Dual

Team heads to Golden as regular season winds down
FORT COLLINS – The team goals will always remain in place, but in the next two weeks, the swimmers will need to put a little focus on their individual needs.
Â
Colorado State's women's swimming team will venture out on its own this Saturday for a dual meet with Colorado School of Mines, a Division II program with no divers. The Rams will have two duals in a seven-day window, the final opportunities to iron out whatever they need to be prepared for the Mountain West Championships on Feb. 21-24 in Houston, Texas.
Â
Saturday's dual is set for 11 a.m. at the natatorium, part of the student recreation center on the Golden campus. The Miners are 2-4 on the season, the most two recent losses to teams Colorado State has topped in duals this season, Denver and Air Force.
Â
The meet gives coach Christopher Woodard a chance to switch up the regular grind of the season by allowing some swimmers to take on off events and possibly find alternatives for some for the championship season.
Â
"It does afford us the opportunity to get some secondary and tertiary events reviewed, especially by kids who might be a little deeper in the season to find out where they stack up against the Mountain West," Woodard said. "For everybody else, I tell them to consider these like pop quizzes. There's only two more, just two more opportunities to go head-to-head with someone to understand what your race strategy looks like. We need to take advantage of that because at this point the cake is already almost baked."
Â
Colorado State is 6-2 in duals this season, coming off a split two weeks ago when they beat Florida Gulf Coast and fell to Miami. The Rams took the opportunity to put on tech suits that meet but will grind out the next two weeks as practices continue to ramp up and bodies are tested even more.
Â
Woodard said this meet, and the next, are prime chances to remind the body and soul it is tougher than it thinks in the final legs of a race, much the way it will feel the third and fourth day of the championship meet. He won't tinker with his relays much, giving quads a chance to work more together, though some spots are up, making splits on every team important.
Â
"These are not meets in any way in terms of our cycling that we'll be rested and ready for. They'll have to be ready to compete fatigued," Woodard said. "That's the deal. You have to figure out what your edge is. We always want to be a team that has an edge going into the third and fourth day."
Â
Colorado State's final dual of the season will be at Moby Pool, when the team hosts Northern Colorado and celebrates the careers of its nine seniors. The divers will have a competition all their own the following weekend when the CSU trio heads to the Air Force Invitational the first three days of February.
