Fight Like a Ram: CSU Partners with UCHealth for Fifth Year Honoring Cancer Warriors

FORT COLLINS – Colorado State Athletics and UCHealth are teaming up for the fifth year of the Fight Like a Ram program. Once again, CSU men's and women's basketball teams along with UCHealth partner to recognize and honor Northern Colorado cancer patients.

Players from both teams will don jerseys with the name of one of the cancer warriors on the back instead of their standard name as a part of the initiative.

Colorado State's women's Fight Like a Ram game is slated for Saturday, January 27 against San Jose State at 1 pm, with the men's game on Saturday, February 17 against Utah State at 3:30 pm.

Along with the gameday recognition, both programs will take part in a hospital visit, a special zoom call with the cancer warriors and a meet and greet at a practice.

"It has been an honor to be a part of the Fight Like a Ram event for five years now. It has been a very meaningful event for our program," CSU head men's coach Niko Medved said. "Our guys take great pride in representing the cancer warriors on their jerseys, they know they are playing for something that is bigger than themselves or CSU. Fight Like a Ram is a great way to support and connect with our community."

"The Fight Like Ram basketball games at CSU are such powerful experiences for our patients and their families. The games remind them that they are not alone - there is a whole community supporting them," said JoAnn Lovins, UCHealth Senior Director of Oncology. "It's also a great opportunity for the patients and their families to spend the night just having fun and making wonderful memories amid what may be a challenging time in their lives. It's so special to see the imprint these amazing athletes leave on the hearts of our patients."

The impact of the game is felt from both programs as women's head coach Ryun Williams has seen firsthand.

"This game has always been the most impactful game of our season the last few years," Williams said, "and it's an honor that we get to represent more than just our University again this year. We all love the game of basketball, but this game is a great reminder that the health and well-being of family, friends and our community is what matters the most."
