Rams’ trio will get mirror tune up for conference meet
The format and layout are nearly identical. So is the competition level, making the Air Force Diving Invitational an ideal tune up for the Mountain West Championships.
Â
The Rams' trio will compete Thursday through Saturday at the Air Force Natatorium, one board devoted to each day. Competition sessions the first two days start at 10:30 a.m.; Saturday, featuring the platform, opens at 10 a.m. There will be a live stream and live scoring available.
Â
"The format is going to be the exact same as it is at the Mountain West Championships, so it couldn't be a better platform for us going into championships," CSU diving coach Chris Bergere said. "I actually think our home meet this weekend was a lot more pressure than Air Force is going to be because of who is watching the meet. Parents were there and the president (Amy Parsons) and the athletic director (Joe Parker) was there. There, it's just going to be better competition, but I think they'll be a little more relaxed. Air Force is kind of our home away from home."
Â
The women's competition will open with the 1-meter springboard on Thursday, followed by the 3-meter on Friday. The top 12 scorers will advance to the finals. Colorado State's divers have been elevating their scores as of late. All three – Maggie Di Scipio, Jozie Meitz and Braeden Shaffer – have hit Zones marks on the 1-meter, with Di Scipio putting up a season-best score of 281.55 as she won both boards in the dual against Northern Colorado.
Â
For the sophomore, it's been a breakout season, climbing into the program's top 10 on all three boards. Shaffer is on the platform list, while Shaffer cracked the 1-meter list having done so on the platform last season. Â For Bergere, the chance to face competition which will be just as challenging as it will be at conference is preferred to the alternative as they all focus on polishing their dive sets on each board.
Â
"We're going to see a lot of good competition that's similar to the Mountain West. There are a lot of similar divers there," Bergere said. "We're not adding any dives. They just need to be sharper, and they need to get into meet mindset of performing their dives well, which they can. We've picked out their dives specifically because they can do these dives well."
