Mountain West Fall Individuals debuts in Las Vegas
FORT COLLINS – As the NCAA attempts to put more of an emphasis on individual play during the fall, the debut of the Mountain West Fall Individuals takes place this week in Las Vegas at the Darling Tennis Center. The tournament runs Wednesday through Saturday, with the winners in the singles and doubles brackets earning automatic spots in the upcoming ITA Masters.
Â
The ITA is hosting a series of events in the fall where players from around the country can qualify for the NCAA Individual Championships, Nov. 19-24 in Waco, Texas.
Â
"We are excited for this new event put on by the Mountain West. With the changes of NCAAs moving to the fall, there are unique opportunities in the fall to qualify for nationals," CSU coach Mai-Ly Tran said. "This event will give us a good preview of some of the top players in the conference before the spring season."
Â
Conference teams were given limited entries, with Colorado State sending a trio of singles players – Victoria Erechtchenko, Sarah Weekley and Vika Zhadzinskaya – in the 32-person draw. In doubles, the Rams have two teams in a 16-team bracket, with Erechtchenko and Weekley forming one duo, freshman Paisha Douglas paired with Zhadzinskaya for the other.
Â
The tournament begins with doubles play for men and women on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. (MT), followed by two rounds of singles play. Each line is guaranteed two matches in the draw.
Â
In the first round of singles, Weekley will face Charlotte Gisclon of Fresno State; Zhadzinskaya takes on Arianna VanHouweling of Air Force; and Erechtchenko is matched with Indya Nespor of Utah State. In doubles, Erechtchenko/Weekley will play fourth-seeded Rebekkah Gaines/Maria Sodre of New Mexico; Douglas/Zhadzinskaya are paired against Zdena Safarova/Maya Dutta of Boise State.
Â
Brackets and live scoring can be found on the Mountain West Tournament page.
