Comeback Not to Be Against Brown

Rams' third-quarter rally not enough

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – After trailing heading into halftime, Colorado State women's basketball mounted a comeback effort that came up just short, ultimately falling to Brown 69-63 on Saturday afternoon at the Puerto Rico Thanksgiving Clasico.

Trailing by as much as 11 in the first half, the Rams (6-3) regrouped in the locker room and posted a 25-point third quarter that turned the tide in favor of the Green and Gold, 49-44, entering the final 10 minutes of play. The Bears (3-5) retaliated in the fourth with a barrage of shots, making 69.2% of their attempts (9-for-13) with four 3-pointers, responding to every Ram bucket and then some.

A tough 2-point jumper from the Rams' co-leading scorer, Marta Leimane, with two minutes remaining tied the game up at 60, but a three from the Bears on the ensuing possession put them right back on top as they closed out the game.

Leimane finished the day with an impressive 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting, her best game of the season, and was joined in scoring by Emma Ronsiek who also chipped in six rebounds.

How It Happened
It was a sluggish start for the Rams as they fell behind 8-1 early behind aggressive attacks on the basket by Brown. The Bears continued to drive inside and draw contact, helping them to a 17-13 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Colorado State struggled to shoot the ball in the second quarter, mustering just two field goals on nine attempts. However, 6-for-6 free-throw shooting helped them chip into the lead as halftime approached, trailing only 27-24 entering the break.

A refreshed Rams team hit the court for the third quarter and created a more effective offense. Spurred by Leimane and Ronsiek, the Rams shot 8-for-13 (61.5%) from the floor with three triples to swing the momentum back in their favor. Good ball movement and stops on the other end allowed CSU to take a four-point lead entering the fourth quarter.

For as hot as Colorado State was shooting in the third quarter, Brown was shooting even hotter in the fourth as they knocked down nine of their 13 attempts from the floor and sank four triples to come from behind to take the lead. Despite a late push from the Rams to tie it, the Bears were effective down the stretch and forced some untimely mistakes from CSU that helped Brown close out the game.
