Team wins four of six completed tiebreak sets
LAS VEGAS – On a day when seven sets required a tiebreaker, Colorado State women's tennis team found the edge it needed.
Â
The Rams won four of the sets – the final one by Sarah Weekley at No. 4 singles leaving the seventh such match (at the top spot between Zara Lennon and Zita Kovacs) abandoned – producing a 4-2 road win over UNLV at the Fertitta Tennis Center on Sunday and gaining a split of Mountain West matches over the weekend.
Â
The Rams improved to 5-4 in conference play (9-10 overall), remaining in the hunt for a first-round bye at the conference tournament help April 24-27 in Las Vegas at the Darling Tennis Center.
Â
The win was notable for the Rams as it was just the second on the road for the team this season (both coming in conference play) and it came against a team situated above them in the standings.
Â
Colorado State earned the doubles point with wins at the Nos. 1 and 3 spots. The top team of Radka Buzkova and Viktoryia Zhadzinskaya won their seventh conference match, 6-4, then it came down to the last line, where Luana Avelar and Logan Voeks won 7-6 (7) in a tiebreak. They are 3-0 in league play since being paired together recently.
Â
The two then proceeded to pace the Rams in singles, both winning to put the Rams in front 3-2 at the time as UNLV won in straight sets at Nos. 2 and 4. Avelar won in straight sets over Cindy Hu at No. 3, 6-4, 7-6. Voeks produced a three-set victory at No. 6 against Aura Fang, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, the first conference win in the freshman's career.
Â
That left both Weekley and Lennon on the court, both in third-set tiebreak scenarios. Weekley would get to the finish line first, producing a 6-7, 6-4, 7-6 (4) win over Coco Zhao at No. 4.
Â
Colorado State closes the regular season with a home match against rival Wyoming on Friday, set for a 3:30 p.m. start at the CSU Tennis Complex. The match will highlight the three seniors on the roster, Buzkova, Lennon and Sarka Richterova.
