Colorado State falls to Fighting Irish to end first road trip
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Colorado State volleyball team fell on the road to Notre Dame Friday night, 3-1 as the Rams struggled to manage the Fighting Irish block and short game on offense.
Â
Playing in Notre Dame's special Volleyball On Ice event, Friday nights game took place at the Compton Family Ice Arena, home to Notre Dame hockey, but it wasn't just the floor that went cold as the Rams offense struggled to produce beyond the first set.
Â
Starting out well, the Rams won set one over the Fighting Irish 25-23 thanks to six kills from Malaya Jones and 14 assists from Emery Hemman.
Â
As a team, the Rams hit .462 in the first set but saw consistent decline through the end of the match as Notre Dame's block began to wake up on defense.
Â
The Fighting Irish also found ways around the CSU block on offense, playing the short game well, notching points on tips and roll shots throughout the match. Notre Dame finished the match hitting .333 as a team with three players in double digit kills
Â
Set scores didn't fall in favor of the Rams after the first set, falling 25-16, 25-21 and 25-15.
Â
Bright spots for the Rams included Jones with 14 kills and two service aces to go along with five digs and three block assists. As a team, Colorado State totaled eight services aces with three from freshman Maria Brun. Libero Kate Yoshimoto also added 19 digs.
Â
The Rams will head back to Fort Collins next week to host a home-and-home against the Colorado Buffaloes Thursday and Friday with Thursday's game set to take place in Moby Arena at 6 p.m. Colorado State will then travel to Boulder Friday at 7 p.m. to conclude the Battle for the Golden Spike.
