Rams Reach Two Singles Semifinals
AIR FORCE ACADEMY – For openers, not too shabby.
Â
Colorado State's women's tennis team opened the season at the Bedford Cup at the Air Force Academy on Friday with a pair of players working their way into singles semifinal matches, each by winning a pair of decisions.
Â
Sarah Weekley advanced in the Alpha draw, while Logan Voeks followed suit in Charley. Overall, the Rams went 8-4 in singles play with each of the six players winning at least one match. Weekley advanced with a straight-sets win over Asem Shoybek of Idaho State, then needed three sets to move past New Mexico's Maud Vandeputte, with Weekley winning the two sets which went to tiebreakers. Voeks cruised in straight sets in both rounds, beating Adel Ismagulova of Wyoming and Sydney Morris of Idaho State.
Â
Of note in singles, both CSU freshmen – Paisha Douglas and Mariya Dobreva – each won their first collegiate match.
Â
When the day turned to doubles play for one round, the Rams won two of their three matches. In the Blue draw, Zhadzinskaya and Douglas put together an 8-3 win over a team from New Mexico, while the tandem Weekley and Voeks dropped an 8-5 decision to a squad from South Dakota. In the Red draw, Dobreva and Erechtchenko posted an 8-5 win over a Utah State pairing.
Â
The Rams continue play in the tournament Friday, with two rounds of doubles and another of singles to set up Sunday's final matches. Play begins Saturday at 9:15 a.m.; Sunday at 9:45 a.m.
