Team picks up a few more victories at Bedford Cup

AIR FORCE ACADEMY – The starting point is in the books, giving Colorado State's women's tennis team a direction for the remainder of the fall.

"I was really happy to see how our team competed. We were able to see our freshmen compete as Rams, which was exciting," CSU coach Mai-Ly Tran said. "They've integrated well with the team and their doubles partners."

Two lines reached finals at the Bedford Cup hosted by Air Force, but the tournament closed without a title for the Rams. Logan Voeks had to injury withdraw from her Charlie final in singles, trailing 6-1 to Sofia Mavor at the point, additionally leading to her pulling out of her finals doubles match with Sarah Weekley.

In doubles, Mariya Dobreva and Victoria Erechtchenko dropped their Red draw final to Denver's Novak Becirovic and Natalie Cinkova, 8-6.

The two CSU freshmen, Dobreva and Paisha Douglas, both picked up singles wins on the final day, each coming in three sets after dropping the first. Dobreva toppled Sydney Morris of Idaho State, 3-6, 6-4, 10-7, while Douglas bested Ines Roti of Davidson, 5-7, 6-2, 10-8.

Douglas also picked up a win in doubles, pairing with Viktoryia Zhadzinskaya in a 6-4 decision over South Dakota's Beata Havlickova and Grace Chadick.

Each match completed gave Tran, her staff and the players input to reflect upon, and what happened between the ears was just as important as the physical mechanisms on the court to her.

"We learned how much of the mental mindset affects the level of play," Tran said. "I was pleased to see how our players used certain mental skills to handle the ups and downs of the matches.

"Overall, they competed well for the first tournament and were able to stay calm and composed throughout. I'm proud of how we were able to enjoy the competition as a team playing at a high level."

The Rams will take the court next at home, hosting the Jon Messick Invitational on Sept. 27-29.
