Rams Fall in Front of Record Homecoming Crowd

Kinnard ties school record with 91-yard punt return

FORT COLLINS – Homecoming weekend produced the largest crowd in Canvas Stadium history, but Colorado State came up short on the field, falling to Hawaii 31-19 on Saturday night.

A crowd of 40,416 held out hope as the Rams attempted a comeback in the second half, but Hawaii running back Cam Barfield broke off a 35-yard touchdown run on a fourth-and-inches play late in the fourth quarter, sealing the Rainbow Warriors sixth victory to earn the program bowl eligibility. Colorado State slipped to 2-5 on the season, 1-2 in Mountain West play.

The Rams trailed 14-7 at the break as the only fireworks from the Rams came on a school-record tying 91-yard punt return for a touchdown by true freshman Javion Kinnard. Offensively the Rams struggled to sustain drives while the defense allowed a pair of scoring passes by Hawaii quarterback Micah Alejedo, one a 75-yard play with Jackson Harris doing most of the work to turn a short toss into an explosive play.

Hawaii built a 24-7 lead after three quarters with Alejado throwing a second scoring pass to Harris, with the Warriors adding a 26-yard field goal.

Colorado State's offense caught some fire at that point, producing a pair of touchdowns on successive drives with the defense providing a three-and-out in between. CSU quarterback Jackson Brousseau connected with Armani Winfield for a 7-yard score. In the next drive, A big play by Tay Lanier on fourth down put CSU in the red zone with a 37-yard catch in traffic, a drive capped by Tahj Bullock's 3-yard touchdown run. The Rams went for 2 after both scores, failing to convert either.

Colorado State comes back next Saturday with the annual Border War, traveling to Wyoming for a 5:30 p.m. kickoff.
