Despite results, team sees improvement

LAS VEGAS – The results weren't what the team was seeking on Thursday, but the hope is the lessons learned will pave the path to success later down the road.

Colorado State dropped all four matches it played on the opening day of the Mountain West Individuals on Thursday in Las Vegas, three in singles and one in doubles, with two of them extended outings.

The doubles team of Luana Avelar and Sorcha Caves fell to the Nevada tandem of Marlene Foerster and Silvia Costache 8-7 (7) to start the day, with Avelar later going three sets in singles before falling to Veronika Kliuch of UNLV, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.

Caves and Stella Simpson-Morgan dropped their singles matches with 6-3, 6-4 scores.

"They were tough match results today, but the players did great in singles and doubles, making adjustments and talking out some different strategies and plans to try," assistant coach Scott Langs said. "They made improvements starting from the Messick tournament, to the Bedford Cup and now here at the Mountain West qualifier."

All three will have one consolation match in singles on Friday. Langs said if there are open courts and teams willing to play, they may work in a doubles match. Both Avelar and Caves will return home from the event, then head to the ITA Mountain Regional in Provo, Utah next week.
