Defensive effort highlights postseason matchup
BOISE, Idaho — Colorado State soccer (10-4-5, 4-2-4 MW) entered one of the most even matches of the Mountain West Championship on paper Sunday night.
In their meeting earlier this season, the Rams and Aztecs played to a 2-all draw in Fort Collins, with goals from Kaja Dionne and Kate Dunne. Sunday's match proved to be a defensive battle after a more productive offensive showing in October.
How It Happened
Sunday's match started with early set pieces for both teams, paired with a promising strike from Olivia Fout. San Diego State tested CSU's back line in the ninth minute, but the Rams' defense stayed composed. Michaela McGowan came off the bench and showed resilience against the Aztecs, winning battles across the pitch and breaking up multiple passes throughout the first half.
Kacie Laurie closed out the half with solid defensive play. The Aztecs entered the second half focused on limiting one of CSU's most productive goal scorers, Fout. Mia Massey recorded CSU's second shot on goal in the half. In the 84th minute, the Aztecs took the lead with their first shot on goal, finding the back of the net.
