Colorado State improves to 5-0
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The task was a tall one, but Colorado State women's basketball battled back from early adversity to earn a difficult 64-58 road win over Oregon State on Friday night, improving to 5-0 on the season.
Â
The Rams fell behind by 11 points quickly, but settled in and battled back to get back into the game before halftime. Lexus Bargesser spurred a 9-0 run to open the second half and put CSU in the driver's seat and flip the script on the Beavers (4-1). Colorado State put a stop to numerous comeback attempts by Oregon State, holding the home team at bay to the finish line.
Â
Oregon State presented a unique challenge, with four players standing as tall or taller than the Rams' tallest player (Bragg, 6-foot-3). The Rams were up to the task, only allowing the Beavers to outrebound them by three while outpacing them in blocks, four to two.
Â
It marked the ninth-straight road win for Colorado State dating back to last season, a top-five longest streak in the nation. Bargesser led the Rams in scoring with 17 points while Hannah Ronsiek (15 points), Madelyn Bragg (10 points) and Kloe Froebe (9 points, 9 rebounds) all turned in solid performances.
Â
How It Happened
Oregon State came out scorching hot as it knocked down each of its first three 3-point attempts to quickly build an 11-point advantage and put Colorado State on the back foot. Not wanting to test the serious size advantage of the Beavers, the Rams steadied themselves by working to get open mid-range looks and knocking them down. Despite 61.5% shooting from the home team, Colorado State trailed by just six points as the first period closed.
Â
It was CSU's turn to take a swing as the second quarter opened, as the Rams rattled off a quick 5-0 run capped by a Bargesser and-one that cut the lead to one. Improved toughness down low helped Colorado State stay in the game as Oregon State re-grouped and put a stop to the run.
Â
After the media timeout, Brooke Carlson found Hannah Ronsiek in the corner for a triple that gave CSU its first lead of the game with just under four minutes to play. It was back-and-forth down the stretch, and another Ronsiek triple as time expired cut the Beaver lead to just two at the break. Ronsiek's 10 points led the way for the Rams, who found themselves in the game despite a 2-for-10 effort from distance.
Â
The Rams took control out of the halftime break, utilizing a 9-0 run to jump out 42-35 with balanced scoring. The teams traded buckets for the middle portion of the period, with Colorado State able to maintain its seven-point advantage. The Beavers knocked down a few shots to bring the crowd back into the game, and a 4-0 run by Oregon State to close the period whittled CSU's advantage down to 49-46. Bargesser was in control for Colorado State, scoring six points on a perfect 3-for-3 shooting in the frame…
Â
Shooting went cold for the Rams to open the final period, missing each of their first three looks from behind the arc which allowed the Beavers to stick around. Oregon State got as close as two points, but Colorado State answered time and time again both on the offensive and defensive end to maintain a two-possession advantage across the final 2:30. Clutch free throws by Bargesser and Brooke Carlson in the home stretch helped the Rams hold strong, while a final forced turnover on the other end sealed the road victory for Colorado State.
