Stanford's fourth-quarter rally up-ends CSU
LAS VEGAS — Colorado State women's basketball suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday as Stanford converted a last-second layup to scrape past the Rams, 62-60.
Â
CSU (7-1) carried a seven-game win streak into the matchup against a high-level Cardinal team (8-1) that had their own season-opening streak snapped the night prior. After taking a lead into halftime, the Rams led for the large majority of the second half before Stanford stormed back with a 13-0 run in the final five minutes to turn the game on its head.
Â
A Madelyn Bragg layup tied the game at 60 with under 10 seconds to play, but out of the timeout Stanford's Chloe Clardy refused the ball screen and blew past the CSU defense to make the deciding bucket.
Â
Lexus Bargesser was the top performer for the Rams, scoring 14 of her team-high 19 points in the first half. Bragg had an efficient 12-point performance, shooting 6-for-9 from the floor.
Â
How it Happened
The first quarter kicked off with a tight contest. Brooke Carlson got the Rams on the board with a 3-pointer, thanks to an assist from Kloe Froebe at 9:15. Stanford responded with a layup from Courtney Ogden, leveling the game at 3-3. Bargesser was a standout for Colorado State, nailing a 3-pointer at 6:18 and following up with a layup to keep the Rams in the hunt. However, Stanford's Nunu Agara made her presence felt with a crucial offensive rebound and tip-in with 51 seconds left, then hit two free throws with just 3 seconds on the clock, giving the Cardinal a 14-10 edge at the end of the first quarter.
Â
Bargesser sparked CSU in the second quarter with a 3-pointer at 9:29, assisted by Hannah Ronsiek. The Rams built on this momentum with consecutive layups by Bargesser and Bragg, who matched her season high with six field goals, taking advantage of Stanford's turnovers. Marta Leimane's layup pushed the Rams' lead to 23-16 with 2:33 to go. Stanford's Carly Amborn hit a 3-pointer with 41 seconds left, chipping away at the lead to 25-23 by halftime. Colorado State outpaced the Cardinal 15-9 in the quarter, maintaining a strategic advantage.
Â
The third quarter was another nail-biter, with Colorado State edging Stanford 20-16. Carlson started the Rams off with a free throw at 9:23, closing the gap to three points. Froebe was instrumental with two free throws at 8:02 and a jumper at 7:19, extending the Rams' lead. Key plays included Bargesser's crucial layup and free throw at 5:03, pushing CSU ahead 35-32. McKenna Murphy's back-to-back 3-pointers in the final two minutes solidified the Rams' lead, closing the quarter at 45-39.
Â
In a heart-stopping fourth quarter, Stanford eked out a 62-60 victory over Colorado State with a last-second layup by Clardy. The Rams' Bragg scored a layup with 7 seconds left to tie the game at 60, following a pivotal 3-pointer by Ronsiek at 56 seconds that brought the Rams within two points. Ogden was clutch in the quarter, sinking a crucial 3-pointer at the 3:10 mark and adding several key baskets. Despite Colorado State's best efforts, including a strong showing from Carlson with a pair of free throws and an assist, the Cardinal's defense, highlighted by Clardy's late steal and score, sealed the game in the final moments.
